Syncro's and 86 tranny

dumb question..........i havent bought a haynes or chilton yet for this truck, but i was wondering what the syncro's do specifically.
is changing them a do it yourself thing or do i need someone with the knowhow?

It's a "if you have to ask you should hire a mechanic" kind of thing, ever rebuilt a tranny before?

i figured that was the purpose, but i wanted to make sure.
and dont worry....................any tranny work will NOT be done by me...........lol
