Surf - dash lights

I have a 2nd gen 4runner (93 Surf), but I am having problems getting access to the heater/air con night lights.

I have some blown bulbs behind the heater and aircon control panel, I want to replace the bulbs but I don't know how to get at them. I have removed the facia plate by removing the two knobs from the fan speed and heat control sliders, then removed the facia plate - There are then *two* plastic light diffusers/reflectors that I assume the bulbs are behind, but I cannot figure out how to remove that bit - It looks to be some wierd type of secret clip type thingo - but buggered if I can figure it out. I hope I dont need to remove the engine and transmition to get at them - any ideas?

the plastic bit behind the facia is different in the surf. The 4runner has two rows of sliders
*top row: re-circ/fan direction
*bottom row Heat setting/fan speed
The surf has the same manual sliders for the bottom row, but the top row are all vacuum controlled push buttons. It seems that the design for the light is different in that there is a plastic light refractor in two peices in the surf for the bottom row only - the 4runner has one bar in place of it.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum James.
That is exaclty how you get to the heater lights on the 2nd gens.
When you see that reflector, you can grab it and it should pull out with one bulb and a green condom on it.

There is a post here with pics I think, I'll see if I can dig it up.

It does seem the Surf is different then perhaps.

Found the post with pics.

Thanx Corey

Corey - Thanx for the super-fast reply! The Surf is different, the plastic light bar is int two peices, not one solid peice. I cannot figure how to remove the two light reflecting peices. I would take a photo, but I dont have my digicam with me - sorry ;-(

Cheers from Australia,

I have now changed the bulbs

I found out how the job is done, this post id for the archives incase another Surf owner has the same issue. The aircon/heater unit needs to be removed from the dash - the control box then needs to be opened up, well the two halfs taken apart. There is then two surface mounted bulbs that can now be accessed. To get the control box out, the radio facia needs to also be removed. the job took me around 30mins. If you want more info, I will be happy to help.

Cheers from Australia.
