A sucker is born every minute

Might it be me?

After buying my 2000 4Runner at a smashing price from a Toyota dealer, I let them tack on another $260 for a "Protodyne 300" alarm. They said, of course, that that was their cost, but they deal in volume, blah, blah, blah. (I haven't had it installed yet, so I can probably cancel it.)

Anyway, I can't find any info on it. They said the Toyota system (RS 3000) would cost more than that in labor alone. What to do, who to believe. This is, however, a very reputable, although huge, Toyota dealership.

Best to all, Rob

Do you have a question for us? Or were you just letting us know that the stealer has claimed another victim?

I think he's asking if the "Protodyne 300" is worth $260.

I've never heard of that, and if you can't find any info on it, I'd think twice. So there's no stock alarm in it right now? Even if there's not, I bet you could drive that 4Runner straight from the dealer to an alarm shop, and for the same $$ or a little more, get a better alarm installed, probably with more features to it.

Hmmmmm

Well, thanks Tom. Is there no honor on this planet? I mean, why won't a (s)dealer just go with Toyota parts? Makes no sense. (I know, markup is huge)

I guess your answer is cancel, quickly. Geez, what ever happened to having it all done under one roof??

I tried looking for info on Protodyne, and this was all I was able to find:

UnitedAuto Care proudly features Protodyne by Ibex for vehicle and personal security products. The Pro300 is a remote control security system, while the Pro200 upgrades standard keyless entry to a full security system.

If it were me, I'd probably cancel. Another option (if you're inclined) would be to look around for a used stock alarm. You may find one online or from a junkyard.

Good luck!

Rob,

You can get the newest Toyota OEM alarm, the RS3200 on ebay for less than $300 brand spanking new! If you look on my alarm reprogramming page, the install is a cinch. Its "plug and play" as they say. http://www.4runners.org/articles/rs3000 Download the pdf file for the install manual. The rs3200 is not much different.

As for your cryogenic alarm, never heard of it. Cancel it asap.

Bob,
Would you happen to know how to reprogram a Viper/DEI alarm? My battery died back in December and the alarm stopped working. My dad and I were able to get it working again with an info sheet we got off the web. About a month ago, my alternator belt broke so I lost the alarm again. I did everything I did the first time but nothing works. The fuse is fine and I think all the wiring is fine (unless the mechanic messed something up when he put the new belt on, but I doubt it). Thanks.

Del, which model?
I have the DEI Python 650, but it would take me over an hour to scan in the reprogramming stuff.

I have had to do a few tweaks to mine after I left CatToy's, as they left some stuff turned off I wanted on.

His name is Ralph (PhxTRDRunner). He was very helpful and can probably hook you up as he is a distributor.

Sounds like the dealer is selling you a load of baloney. Take your $ and drop it on an Alpine or Clifford Alarm. Lots of shops do free installs w/ purchase.

W/ these (and other aftermarket) alarms, you'll get additional features like remote start (gotta purchase add-ons) and you can get some of the better ones to remotely roll down windows, open sunroofs etc.

I have the stock alarm if you want it. $100 shipped? I'm pretty sure everything is included. I can check it you want it.

[/QUOTEI'd take that as a "NO" on the dealer install.
Do it yourself, save some moola, have a good deal of pride in your rig when you tell someone..... "The alarm system? Yes, I installed it myself!"

I removed the stock alarm when my Viper VX790 went in. I don't need it any more.

Dan, dont know what happened to my post. I only wanted to quote your offer to sell your factory alarm for $100.00. I thought/ still think its the way "Further" should go.
Sorry for the mix-up!!

I'm not sure, but on the back of the remote, it says RPN471(or I, not sure)T. Underneath that it says 2^66 ROLLING CODES.

PhxTRDRunner responded to my last question about the alarm, but couldn't help me out. He said to take it to a dealer, but I figured I'd try to see if anyone else knew anything before I took it in.

I sell Viper alarms at my store. Which model is it? What kind of remote is it? 2/4 button? What color is the led on the remote? Red or Green? The model number of the remote should have a "VT" prefix. If your unsure, what features does it have?
