stupid...... tranny question
Ok guys I'm new to the 4runner I only bought my 2000 SR5 V6 4x4 about a month ago. So today I tried to change my oil and was sucessful, but in the confusion I made a stupid mistake. The first drain plug I removed was the automatic transmision fluid one. the fluid began to drain I didn't pay attention to what color it was until after it was half out. So the Transfer case is now empty and I went to the local store and picked up three quarts of AFT for it.
I read the Tech section on refilling, but the manual says it only takes 2.1 quarts of I put more that 2.1 quarts almost three and the dip stick still reads below the cool mark. I don't want to over or under fill my automatic transmission. Does the tranny need more than 3 quarts of ATF? Or am I doing somthing wrong.
Thanks for your time and please go easy on me.

OK you have me confused.
What are you trying to refil? The auto trans or the transfer case?
Simply fill the auto trans until it is to the top of the hot mark with the engine running. There is a total of 15 quarts in the system. When draining the pan you will get much less then that. The longer your keep the plug out the more will drain. If you let it sit over night you can get more out of it, but flushing is the only way to get all 15 quarts flushed out. I have info on that on my site.
A quick pan drain might get you between 3-quarts. The proper refill amout is determined by the DIP STICK.
Fill the transfer case with GEAR oil until it comes out of the fill hole.
