That's what happens when you get a Jeep. Seriously though, it looks kinda like they made some kind of sled to carry the back end of the Jeep. Interesting.

i'm guessing that they broke a rear axle, so they put it onto a couple of makeshift skids made from logs and dragged it out

 

Yep, the wonders of a c-clip axle. Lose the clip or break the axle and it walks right out of the housing.
