Steering gear bad at 136,000 miles...

I just got back from the stealership and I need all new steering gear at only 136,000 miles. To me this seems unusual for such a major part to go out this early on a Toyota. Has anyone else had problems with or had to replace thier steering gear?
thanks

P.S. I have a '97 4Runner

Update: Went and got a 2nd opinion at my local Tire store....and all that need to be replaced are the bushings within the steering gear. :-)
Made my day. Toyota wanted about $1300 to do the steering gear.
Daystar poly bushings are about $130. Huge difference there.
So, if Toyota tells you that you need new steering gear, it could just be the bushings.

Peace

I had my '95 Toy steering gear replaced @ 124K miles.
I purchased a rebuilt power steerin gear from a San Diego outfit for under $300. Works great!
