i have a 81 4x4 pickup 22r 5spd the guy i bought it from put a new starter on it he said that the problem with it was the new starter is rubbing on the fly wheel i tore off the star gear in 8 miles (getting it home after i bought it)i took the starter to the auto parts store and they said that it was the right starter for the truck. is there somthing they are not telling me if you have any info plese e-mail me @ blaze1916@yahoo.com

I have found you wont get alot of 1st or 2nd gen help on here or everbodys been alseep for the month Ive been a member.

As to your guestion, If the starter is the correct one then I would suspect that the PO might of change the flywheel to one that is not right. If you can go to napa and get pn# REL446047 and if that dont fix it you got the wrong flywheel.

 

Sounded like the starter never disengend from the flywheel after it was stated to wear off the end while driving 8 miles on a new starter. Looks like the problem is a bad flywheel like SoCal said. Take out the starter and look at the flywheel teeth for sharp pointed teeth for the problem, and bad wear.
