#$%&...Starter died!

Hey All!

My starter is showing signs of failing REALLY soon. I would like to do it myself. I don't think it should be too hard (at least not as hard as my 92). Can anyone tell me approximately how long it should take?
I just read the post from a little while ago about starter replacement, but I don't know how much time I should alot. Also, are there any specialized tools needed?

Here's my stats:
96 4Runner
3.4L V6
130,000+ miles

Thank you!

Man I am REALLY sorry, I had that happen over the summer to me, the thing just started clicking and not starting very often, I wanted to do it on my own as well but couldn't because the darn thing was jammed up right next to my transimission, but that is on a 3rd gen Runner. I don't know how it would be for you at all, but I just wanted to let you know that I feel your pain and wish you all the luck.

I had my mechanic do it for me, he didn't charge me labor at all, but the part set me back almost 300 bucks.

Once again good luck, hope someone here can help ya out with your question.

I've got a 3rd gen, too. I've been calling around to see how much places will charge to install it. Average price is $440 from a dealer and a reputable independent repair shop. Autozone wants $130 for a reman. starter. There's another place that sells reman. starters for $99. They will install it for $20 providing there's no obstructions.

Hmmm...decisions, decisions.

I would never go to Firestone, but I was stranded when mine died last year. Cost me $300 for the starter and $30 for the install even though it took 8 hours.

Check into this if you have a chance, much less money and you get to keep your original starter
