Speedometer buzz

Hey ya'll-
on cold mornings I hear a clicking sound from my speedometer, could it be the needle or the odometer? Any ideas?

Probably your speedometer cable needs lubed. Mine does it too, but I just ignore and it eventually warms up and goes away.

That is perfectly normal if your cable has dried out.
We had mid 20 temps last week, and mine did it every single day for the first 5 minutes of driving.

It's loud enough to drive you out of the cockpit.
The only cure is to disconnect the whole cable and lube it, or replace it.
Not very easy.

When I get tired enough of it, I'll fork over the $150 or so to my dealer to put in a new cable for me.
Not something I would look forward to doing, unless I was 4'5" tall and was able to crawl up under the dash.

noise

So, that's what that noise is! Mine does it too, and it is starting to drive me nuts. I guess I should oil it.

Have fun.

We could start a whole little support group, 'cause I'm in too! Who knows what all else I have shaken loose while pounding the snot out of my dashboard trying to get the ticking to stop.

Glad to know I am not the only one. Any ideas for the more mechanically minded?, Corey, you always have an idea that seems to work.

If you can get your cable off the back of the speedo unit, I year you can work some oil/grease (not sure what kind to use) down the cable, but realize it goes clear down to the tranny I beleive.

I'll just end up letting the dealer do this one with a new cable.
Mine only does it in cold weather.

It will start out with a few ticks and the needle jumping all over the place, then it works up to a loud scream that can drown out a conversation.

I wish I had the digicam with me a few days ago so I could have recorded it.

The only damage that happened to me was a few years back.
I was driving to work in the wee hours of the morning when it kicked in at freeway speed.

It did it for a few minutes, then the right side light for the speedo cluster popped.
I still have not replaced the bulb, but I think it was caused by the heavy vibration from the cable squealing.

I also could smell it burning, and then there were bits of plastic dust behind the clear speedo cover.

I have a squealy speedo also, I hope its the cable and not the actual speedo itself. As I have my engine/tranny out right now, it wasn't too hard to get it out. Having a skinny wrist helps as you reach up just outboard of the gas pedal. I could just reach up and unlock it from the back of the speedo, then from the engine bay just pull it right out. Like I said, because the other end was already unhooked and easy to get, this wasn't too bad at all. Just hope its not too hard to get the damn thing back in. I also need to find out what type grease to use in the thing, as my local speedo repair guy is on vacation. Anyone know the specifics on this?

I lubed my speedo cable the other day, i just unhooked it from the cluster and pulled it through the firewall. I sprayed it with WD40 and put a couple cap fulls of 5W-30 in it for good measure. It is finally silent now.
