Sounds like custom exhaust, but isnt...

Yello everyone. In the morning, before my runner warms up (like 5 minutes), it sounds like I put custom exhaust on (but REALLY bad). I know there's a hole somewhere, but I have no idea where. Anyone had this before?? I don't want to take it to the mechanic, because I'd have to leave it overnight for the engine to cool down and I don't want to do that. Thanks.

Most likely it is a gasket, or a loose connection somewhere. The fact that it doesn't sound as loud when it warms up would go with this theory. Try to get a general idea of where the noise is (maybe use a PVC pipe). Then look for the closest connection point and give it a tug when it is cold.

Hope that helps!

Del, that's too funny. My 95 just started doing that crap. Once mine hit's a cetain RPM it will quit too. I think it's around 3k or so. I got irritated at it ,and gave it w.o.t. for a second. That's how I figured out the 3k thing. I figure it's a gasket, but I haven't had the time to look yet. It's kind of hard to track too, because once it warms up or, if it's not to terribly cold out side, it won't do it. Let me know if you find out which gasket it is, and I'll do the same.

Hey Del,

I have absolutely no fix for your problem but I see that you live down in Redondo Beach. Me and the misses used to live there for 2 years when I was working for Toyota Motor Sales on Western...where abouts are you in RB? We used to live off Esplanade and Sapphire. A stone's throw away from the beach. Used to jog the path right south of the pier...those were the good ol' days!

Anyways, welcome to the boards.

JSB,
Yea mine cuts off too at a certain RPM (probably 3 also), I just left it out cause I didnt think it would matter. I'll let you know as soon as I find something out though.

Bob_98SR5,
I live right on the border of Redondo and Torrance, right off of Calle Mayor (west of PCH). It's weird cause my zip is Redondo, but we pay taxes to Torrance (go figure). Yea I love living by the ocean. Too bad I cant surf for a while though cause I tore my ACL snowboarding :pat:

Del,

Sure, I know the area where you live. The places (fairly close to your area) my wife and I miss the most is El Burrito Jr on PCH (sound of Torrance Blvd) and Pedones. We still live in So Cal (Glendale) and make it down to RB, but one day we'll buy a house down there. Miss the ocean air (sniff, sniff).

In anycase, good luck w/ the repair!

Bob

My truck with 22RE did that, but instead of cutting out at higher RPMs, it would get quiet once it warmed up. Turned out to be 2 pulled and stripped studs holding the exhaust manifold to the head.
