Slipping clutch

Angry Slipping clutch

Help, I have a 1991 Surf and it drives fine, except the clutch slips when I floor it from idle in 3rd and 4th gear..... Why does it only do it in these 2 gears? Surely if it was on it's way out it would slip right through the range wouldn't it? Help please.

It depends. Your clutch slips because the surface doesn't grab on the flywheel as well. If you are even close to being to low in a certain gear (say 15 mph in 3rd) and you gun it, you put extra force or torque on the clutch disc and it will more than likely slip. If you let it go long enough, it will probably slip across the board.

Unhappy Clutch

Cheers mate, do you think I should get a new clutch then or what? A guy over here in Blighty told me that if I get a flywheel from a UK spec Hilux pick up, then I can get a pick up clutch put in, otherwise I've got to order an imported clutch from Milners off road. Any Ideas as to whether this would work?

I was faced with a slipping clutch just like you. And that was at 66K miles, because the previous owner rode the clutch everywhere.

After doing hours of research on clutches, I decided to go with a new factory clutch. The main reason was cost, and the second was durability. The Toyota clutch is very durable when properly used.

My vote is to replace the stock clutch with another OEM clutch. Unless you are pushing massive amounts of power, or rock crawling everywhere, there is no need to go with an overpriced aftermarket flywheel and clutch.

Save your money.

Its always a good idea to at least get the flywheel resurfaced when you replace the clutch (like getting brake rotors resurfaced). I've heard you can get away without doing it once, but the second time its a must. The problem is how to get the flywheel off. Most people I know find something to wedge in the starter gears to keep it from moving when you turn the bolts. I've heard of some people rubbing it lightly with fine grit sandpaper for the first clutch replacement.

You may also want to replace the throw-out bearing since you'll already been in there.

Clutch
Pressure plate
Pilot Bearing
T/O Bearing
Flywheel resurfaced

To be really complete, bleed the hydraulic fluid also.

I'm getting a weird noise that sounds like transmition input bearing. My clutch was done two years ago so it should be good for another 15 years. However it looks like i'll have to pull my tranny and fix it before too long anyway. It really sux to have to do all that work to replace 1 $15 part. :pat: Does it sound like enough of an excuse to put in a second transfer case? I mean while I have the tranny/transfer out anyway I might as well slap on another transfer right?

There's no way i'm paying a shop $120 to do it for me though. I'll call it a learning experience.

My truck was doing the same exact thing a couple
weeks ago, I had the clutch done and its great to
have power there when you need it
