<sigh> Yet another oddball occurance with my tonka..

I changed the oil today. Pretty basic. Drain the old stuff out.. figger out how to get ahold of the filter, yard it off, slap on a new filter, and chug-a-lug the new oil into the crankcase. Brainless.

Only problem is I now have a slight, but steady flow of oil coming from the filter area. I backed off the filter and reseated it. No luck. I even checked the old filter to make sure the old gasket didnt stick to the block. No problems there. I even tried putting the filter wrench on teh dang thing to tighten it, but theres not enough clerance in tehre to get it to grab securely enough.

Anyone got any ideas?

Try a different oil filter.

Are you putting the same brand oil filter back on? Could be some kind of difference in the way each manufacturer makes them.

Did you put a light coat of oil on the new filter's rubber gasket? This will help achieve a proper seal.

Both filters are Fram ( I know.. they're crap ) so there shouldn't be any Mfg. differences. I did indeed put a thin film of oil on the new gasket before attaching the filter.

When you slapped it on maybe you slightly puctured the filter. I have seen filters with manf. defects and leak aroung the seams. I would try a new filter. Maybe oil sending unit is busted and leaking just my .02 worth!

it could be residual oil from pulling the filter off....

same thing happened to me.

I changed oil and filter and had small drips of oil for about 2-3 days. When you remove the filter, oil spills all over the place (frame, side of engine, oil pan). I sprayed it all off with the hose and it's A-OK now.

Well.. i'm hauling a couple extra quarts to and from work with me today to make sure I dont get to low. Once the engine cools off a little this afternoon, I'm goinh to yarf off the filter and throughly clean the mating surfaces (and check for a stuck gasket the previous owner may have missed) and see fi that solves it.

me too

Mine does the same thing. All aftermarket oil filters apparently have a way different gasket design than the OEM.

Solution: Toyota OEM oil filters. I picked up a dozen on ebay a couple of days ago for 60 bucks shipped.

Replace the filter with something besides a Fram (Wix, Purolator, OEM). I have personally had 3 Fram filters that had pinhole leaks in them. They are crap!! Take off the filter and spray down the area with some brake cleaner/ carb cleaner to remove the oil residue so you can see if there is any gasket or build up on the mounting surface. Put oil on the new filter and seat-it 1/2 to 3/4 turns past hand tight.

I work heavy industry building railcars, and ocean-going barges. I buck steel plate all day long. My version of 'Hand Tight' is more than most peoples '1/2 turn past'...

i've got a five fingered 'filter wrench'!

i'd agree, try using a wix filter. 1515 is a good one, basically a ford v8 filter(though it's specified for a toyota diesel). holds at least an extra half quart of oil...

Got it figgered.

The Fram book specified the wrong filter apparently. The gasket was too small diameter, but would have managed a seal on the block had it not been for this:

Gasket (linked because it's huge)

Note the nick in the gasket. So I just put the old filter back on till I can stop by the parts store on the way to work tomorrow.

There's a guy at work who also has a '77 2WD that's been immensely halpfull with my toy, and he says he just uses the PH8A from Fram... the most common filter there is. That's the same filter I use on my Mopars. Can anyone verify this?
