shocks struts???/ Possible lift

2001 4runner Limited. Stock to the bone, 84K miles.

Okay first of all do I have shocks or struts?

How do I know when they need to be changed?

Who makes decent ones?

Should I consider a lift, wanting to go to 265/75/16?

Thanks guys

You have struts in the front and shocks in the rear. You will not need a lift for 265/75/16. If you do get a lift you will want bigger tires than that. I think I changed my struts and shocks around 100k and they were pretty much toast.

Well, the stock shocks/struts were pretty much crap so they will be worn soon if not already.

you know they are worn out if you go over a bump, and the whole truck shifts side to side. Its hard to explain, you just know if they are dead. And doesnt the truck have shocks on the front as well? I thought a strut is defined by replacing the upper "a" arm as well as being a shock.

well the thing is is kinda bounces over bumps and the bumps are kina violent. Of course I bought this used so I do not know how they ride new and my other runner is an 87 so I really can't compare the 2.

bounce on your bumper numerous times then stop. if it keeps bouncing a bit after..they're shot. if the damping seems to wallow after bumps..they're shot. struts are just shocks with a perch which a coil spring sits on and a cap at the top to secure the spring. if youre only going to 75 series with same width..no need to lift. once you go wider and taller..then yeah..lift that bad bwoy. who makes decent shocks? they all do. lotta susp opions & reviews on here and 4X4wire.com. look em over...
