Setting timing on 3vze

I am having trouble setting the timing on my 95 4Runner. I know i am getting a good connection on the jumper wire because my OD and CEL are flashing. But there is no change in timing. As of now I have set it by feel but I would like to set it correctly with a light.

Is there somthing im not doing. The engine is idling at 800rpm in park and the throttle is fully closed (on the stop). Engine is fully warmed up. I apprieciate any help you guys provide.

The inability to set base ignition timing could very well be a TPS (throttle position sensor) problem.

Is that the only thing that can cause this. If so ill just buy a new one and be done with it. But I dont want to buy one if it could be somthing else.

Yup, I concur w/ chickenlover. The TPS is probably bad.

You can test your TPS with a multimeter to see if it's bad. There is a thread on how to do it somewhere on here. If you buy a new one it is very tricky to adjust properly.

This might help. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml

Well, I took it to a shop today and had them try to set the timing. They said that when the engine idles it drops to base timing even if you dont have the connector crossed on the data link connector. They said toyota only says to cross the connector in case somthing else is not working correctly and wont let it drop to base timing at ldle. Is this true? When setting the timing, will it still advance with throttle or should it stay at one spot? At ldle it will jump around about 5 deg, read and advance the same with or without the connector crossed.

I read all the posts here and you need to jump the connector for one and if the idle doesn't drop it's your TPS as mentioned, Try taking the TPS out and cleaning it w/tps cleaner or carb cleaner, preferably tps cleaner as the carb cleaner has the tendency to eat tps's! Respec your tps and jump your connector, set your timing. If you don't do this the ecu will set your timing for you and your timing will be off! You need to jump this connector and your idle should drop, If after doing all this and your idle doesn't drop, it might be time to purchase a new TPS. >This is all true!

I cleaned out the tps and all i can say is WOW. My power is back and the transmission is shifting alot better too. I still notice a slight bog right off idle and still cant get the timing to go to base but overall the truck is running WAY better. The cleaning definetly helped but maybe I still need a new tps. Crossing the connector has absolutly no effect on timing or idle.

ok i'm confused, and have searched all over, is it possible to set the base timing without jumping the data link? the PO for my truck decided it was a good idea to just remove the data link all together so it's impossible to jump it. can i just cross the wires that would normally go to the data link and if so does anyone know the color of the wires that need to be crossed? or do i just need to go buy a data link from somewhere that i can splice back in?

It doesn't do anything on mine neither. I'm not sure, but it might be because I have it advanced way too far though(on purpose).

Yes, it is. I do it all the time.
