SC installation prices...

I called several dealers to get prices today on an install since my SC came today. My dealer wanted $720. Another said $580 when they quoted me at $480 last week. Anther said $520. Finally after banging my head on the table debating whether to install it myself and forgoe a splendid warranty, I called Toyota of Dallas. They are the furthest from my house at 20 minutes yet are one of the largest Yota dealers in Texas.

Amazingly enough, the price quoted to me was $400. I nearly hit the ceiling when I heard this. Sign me up I said. I'll let you know about the quality of the work later. Sorry but I had to tell someone about my excitement and I knew ya'll would understand.

Oh, BTW, my girlfriend and I got engaged last night. Only 8 more $320 ring payments.

Later,
Nick

Congrats on the engagement!!! You should do the install yourself and make a double payment on the engagement ring

Not only that but you will have better knowledge about your S/C and its workings by doing it yourself. Or you can take the money and put it into fuel mods (electronics, ejectors, etc.), buy a TRD exhaust, put it towards headers ... ... ... ... ...

Just my .02

Cheers

I've seen a few posts from people asking how much a dealership charges for supercharger installation and thought I'd report my findings ...

I ordered my SC and, after looking over the installation instructions yet again, came to the inescapable conclusion that any damage I might inflict on my rig by attempting the installation myself would easily exceed, oh, say $500, I used that figure for my top end.

I called the dealership where I bought my 'Runner and asked if anyone there had done a TRD installation. I spoke with a master mechanic who has done "a few."

I was quoted $350 to do the job -- a bargain when you consider that I'd most certainly do more damage than that, so I'm gonna schedule the install with them.

Just watch ... the bill will be $800!

My install cost me about $350 I think. I had them do it because of the very big impact it could have on the warranty. This is not a matter to be taken lightly! If you do the install yourself, does it not limit your warranty on it to 1 year, whereas if a dealer installs it, it's covered under the 3/36k? This was the deciding factor for me, not the cost.

My brother bought a S/C over the net from a Toyota dealer and had it installed in his 2001 4Runner for around $350 at the dealership in Santa Barbara. This sounded cheap not only in price, but also cheap for SB, which is known to be VERY expensive for anything...

I installed myself with no problems in about 5 hours start to finish. I like to know that I can do things like that

Mine just came today...took me about 4 hours to be meticulous about it, cleaned EVERYTHING, and was very carefull to re-use every mounting point for harnesses and lines...I think it is a very easy install, and most do-it-yourself'ers could easily do it as long as they take their time! I'll post pics later tonight, I just got done, so I'm off for a drive!

btw- here in the valley I was quoted anywhere from $580 on the high end, to $340 being the best deal. AFter looking at the install instructions, I tackled it.

Install it yourself.

At the most you will ever need is a new or overhauld nose drive that you can get for less then the cost of the "dealer" installation.

How many miles currently on your truck anyway?

Plus, but installing it yourself you will really get to know your truck and the supercharger system so you can fix problems on your own without being at the mercy of the dealer who is likely going to botch the install anyway. Most of the problems with the superchargers have been caused by poor dealer installations.

If you do go for a dealer install, find a dealer mechanic that has installed several before yours and just don't shop price. You don't want him learning on your truck.

If you drive to Southern Maryland I will throw that puppy on for you and you can buy lunch.

OK, Gadget and you other generous (and confident) guys, what about the instruction's insistence on using a tensionometer to adjust the SC belt. The admonishment to "buy or rent a tensionometer" and to NOT just guess at the belt tension is unequivocal. Do all of you self-installers have tensionometers?

So, we have offers of help from AZ and MD ... isn't there ANYONE even remotely close to the midwest (IN) who knows how to pop one of these puppies in and is equally generous? :-)

The new s/c have a belt tensioner that maintains the correct tention on the belt at all times. I just tightened the belt the best I could(without tentionmeter). You should be able to tell if there's too much slack on the belt.

Yes I have a belt tension gauge. The tension of the belt still needs to be initially set using the tension guage and then it should maintain it from there.

You maybe able to get away without using a tension gauge on the tensioner more then you could with the old style pulley plate, but, if you get a chance to get it checked then you really sould have it done.
