Safety-wired ball-joint boots?

Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a new old 4Runner. Saw one yesterday that I really liked. '98, V6, Stick-shift, runs and drives like new.

Looking in the front wheel wells I noticed that the upper ball joint boots had safety wire around the fat end of the boot. Both sides are the same, so while my first guess was that a boot tore and it was a cheapo fix I started thinking that since they're both the same maybe it was done as a preventative measure? Has anyone ever heard of someone doing that? It was a neatly executed job, and I didn't hear the joints clunking or anything when I drove it at least - couldn't really take a pry bar to them yesterday.

Thanks,

Chris

Dad's '98 4Runner is like that (bought brand new from the dealer), as is my '04 Tacoma.

Yeah, just heard back from my mechanic. It's factory. Sure doesn't look it in execution, but not a bad idea.

Thanks!
