Unhappy Rock + windshield = BLAH!!! Help!

Got a little pebble kicked up from the road on the the highway. It left a small chip (1/8") in the windshield. There are 2 lines spreading from the chip in opposite directions, each about 1/4" long.
Would I be able to save the glass by using one of those glass repair kits they sell at auto stores? Should I take it to auto glass shop instead?
I really don't want to have to replace the entire windshield

Check with your insurance co.
They should be able to fix (replace) it for you.
I had a chip in my windshield and it wouldn't pass inspection because of it (even though it was like that for 9mo.)
Ins. Co. replaced it for free.
I just told them that it happened a day ot two earlier.

I got a good wack a few months back. I took it to a local auto glass shop and for $40 they fixed it. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I see more wacks coming anyway.

I was told by friends that Insurance will fix windshilds, and in some states they forgo the deductable, because its such a safety issue.

For $40 I'd just as soon keep my Insurance Co out of it. Let them think I keep it parked in a garage all the time.

If it hasn't spread too far you might want to get a glass cutter and cut in a perpendicular line at the edges to make "T"s.

That's supposed to stop the spread of the crack from what I hear.
I don't know for sure myself - anyone?

This does work... I was going to suggest it myself until I saw your post.

A diamond tipped scribe would do just fine.

I agree that if its spreading its too late.

Most insurance companies cover glass under comprehensive, not collision, so basically you have a much smaller deductible, and your rates don't go up for making a claim.

Also look in the yellow pages, alot of glass shops offer a coupon that essentially waives the deductible.

The day after we had my wife's windshield replaced we got a rock chip. It had little cracks (small) coming from it. The glass shop did the repair and it has lasted for 4 years so far. In our state, they cannot do the "repair" if it is in the drivers front vision.

Get it professionally repaired.

I got my chip repaired "under the table" for $30. I saw a company window chip repair guy replacing some dude's window in my office parking complex. Ran out, pointed at my 4runner and said "how much?" with a wink.

Normal rate he said was $65. Just get it done b/f it expands. Once it expands, the "arms" from the crack are more difficult to conceal.

maybe you could claim it under warranty? got any friends at a dealership?

that's what happened when some dumb kid at the appartment complex next to my moms office building was shooting his BB gun at people and cars. it busted out the back window of my mom's toyota sienna. completely shattered. we went to the dealership 10 minutes before they closed. we told the repair guy what happened, but we asked him if we could just get it under warrnaty. we had to make up a good story, so my mom said "i closed the slider door to put something in the back seat and i heard the crash, and saw the window broken.

the repair rep wrote that down and got it fixed under warrnaty the next day

good luck
