I need to replace my instrument cluster and I was wondering if the mileage info is stored in the ECU or in the odometer cluster itself? and if it's stored in the cluster, how do I reset them? can I even reset them?

 

i think its only stored on the cluster but not positive

 

it's in the ecu i believe for the trucks with digital odometer. The new one should show the mileage on your truck.

 

I need to replace mine as well, my gas gauge is foo-bard. I'm pretty certain that is stored in the ECU. The only thing stored in the gauge cluster itself is the A and B odometer readings. Those will just be zeroed out.

If you have the non digital odometer, then the gauge is a mechanical odometer and almost impossible to reset without violating motor vehicle laws. If you do get a replacement odometer what you can do is take the info from the old odometer, copy that infor on to the back of the new one along with the data from the new one. This provides a record of the instrumentation at the time of replacement. I had an old Ford that had s kilometer speedo in it (came from Canada) and it had been replaced before at a dealership and they had done the same thing. Record all the information and keep a copy of the data in the glove box in the owners manual along with writing it on the back of the replacement cluster. You are the only one who really needs to know what it was until you sell it then disclose that information to the new buyer.

 

Tampering with odometer settings is actually a felony. Which is another reason we have the mileage listed on titles when they are baught and sold. The DOT has all of those records in their computers.

 

I replaced mine a couple of years ago and the miles on the odometer were what was on the new one. It didn't retain the original mileage or A & B trip miles. So to answer the question: It's stored in the cluster.

It is stored in an Eprom chip in the cluster, not in the ECU.
Only a dealer can set the mileage for you.

I looked into this somewhat when I was doing my SR5 cluster. It has the physical numbers, and I adjusted it to match the mileage on the cluster I pulled out. It's my understanding that you can adjust them legally, so long that it's for the sole purpose of keeping it accurate.

 

This is correct, adjusting the numbers is only a felony if you attampt to decieve someone else during the purchase of your vehicle. The older guage cluster with a mechanical odometer can be adjusted at home, the Eprom chip style can't.

when selling the vehicle just note it has a replacement odometer and state what the miles are that are missing. that way you can avoid PMITA prison
