Removing Inside Panel of 3rd Gen. Liftgate.

Does anyone have pics of the rear inside panel removed... I want to make sure I know where all the fasteners are before I start ripping and tearing.

Better yet, can someone walk me through removing the license plate surround?

Aside from the pull strap on the lift gate, it's just pop-on plastic fasteners. If you break any buy em' from Lowes or Home Depot. They're much cheaper than going to Toyota, and just as good. Just take your time, and make sure the plastic isn't cold, i.e. above freezing or higher outside, or you'll crack the plastic if you bend it too far.

Wow, I never knew you can buy those fasteners there. Thanks!

Yeah, I've seen them both @ Lowes and Home Depot. Seems that I've been missing all this neat stuff in these drawers. They even label them " automotive style fasteners ". Go figure.

yeah, and they're probably 1/3 or 1/2 the price of the Toyota ones. Thanks for the heads up.

yeah, jsut unscrew the strap handle thing. take a plastic scraper and work your way around the edge and one by one pop the fasteners out. Once you start getting it off, it becomes real apparent where the fasteners are. oh and if you break one, dotn worry, you dont need them all, mine is missing a few.

i had to take mine off with the door still shut, and that was alot harder. The cable that unlatches the door broke on mine, so the thing wouldnt open.

4RUNR thanks for the pics! Now, I'm guessing, in order to get to the license plate surround all I have to do is remove the large black panel?

I would imagine so. I only had the small black piece off only to realize I have a sliding window and can't put a speaker in there

Remove all the bolts (10mm?) I used a bungee cord to hang the panel from one of the holes as there are a bunch of wires I did'nt need to disconnect. The surround has a few screws and some press tabs things that are in tight corners and a bitch. You can see plainly what needs to be removed to get the surround out. The key lock was a bit tricky, remove the light housings and reverse to install. It helps to have a helper too. Good luck.
