I just use a good ol' spade-type garden shovel. One of these days i'll buy a folding shovel.

The same military entrenching tool (e-tool) I was issued 17 years ago. I am such a pack rat...

I purchased a 4 foot tall spade shovel with handle for $11 @ Lowes Hardware. I just strapped it onto the side of my roof rack and its ready to go within seconds. Ive only used it two times in the two months ive had it. Blue

 

any ol shovel will work so long as it's not old and falls apart.

watch out for cheap plastic handles that can break as RobT2k has done on one of the runs I did with him. Any ol shovel that Home Depot/Lowes sells is fine

Just get one that you like. Prices range from 5-25...

 

Yeah my handle was held on with short nails. I replaced them with longer screws and it holds up nice now. It's just a $10 D-handled shovel and fits on the floor across the back of the cargo area (secured of course)

of my shovel bolted down to my Hi-Lift jack. IIRC, paid 25 cents for it at a garage sale.

 

Mine is a short one with a fiberglass handle on it which I drilled two holes in it so it would fit a custom mount I made for my roof rack.

you could also probably get a shovel from an army surplus store for a fairly reasonable price

 

I like this little jewel. It's the Gerber/Fiskars NATO spade. A bit pricey ($38), but very compact and light. I keep it in my little storage bin in back.

jalaber- I think the german one is shweet, but the NATO one is better. Folding is good.
