Recommended source for JDM Engines

So the more I think about the blown head gasket in our 4Runner and the more I read about potential problems with future head gasket problems in the bi-metal engines, the more I think I just want to get a low mileage Japanese engine and swap 'em out...

So, anybody here buy a JDM engine and can recommend a seller for the 5VZFE engine??? I'm in Colorado, so the closer the better, but of course could always get it freighted out here.

Thanks!

Jeremy

Try Foreign Engines in Couer d' Alene, ID they carry a wide selection of the JDM engines. You should be able to find thier number on blackbook.com.

i bought mine off e-bay a couple of months ago from seller "jdm of miami"
i emailed him directly and bought the motor "privately" and negotiated a price-it came down to $900 w/ freight shipping, terminal to terminal from miami to md.
don't know if he has anymore but,he still sells on ebay and has good feedback.

i replaced the motor myself and swapped all sensors including the intake/exhaust manifolds from my old motor to the new one.
also, swapped into the jdm motor the oil cooler off the old motor.
basically you'll tear down the jdm motor until its just a long block.
good thing though is you'll end up w/ extra parts like alternator,a/c compressor, starter and extra sensors etc.
oh and since you're there, i replaced all seals-cams(2),crank,main,new water pump, timing belt, valve cover.
also had to swap out the oil pan and oil pump as the motor i got was off a 2 wheel drive tacoma-the dipstick tube was located mid engine instead of the front.

BTW: saw your other post about R/R motor-i left the tranny in and just supported it with a jack and some 4/4 wood blocks.
one thing that really helped was custom making the engine alignment pins-basically, 2 long tranny bolts w/ the heads cuts off and a slit for a flat head screw driver to remove them once the engine/tranny are mated.
can be made using a dremmel...

pics of my jdm motor on page 3

me and another forum member are on the same page here....see post 11...custom engine/tranny alignment tool-exactly what i made

Good tips! Thanks VR4! Do you happen to know what threads they are for the 'dowel screws'? I'm guessing M10x1.0 or maybe M12x1.25???

BTW, I found a local source for JDM 5VZ in Denver. Payin' $1100 for it, but also gettin the other OEM replacement parts at cost (TB, WP, seals, gaskets, etc...)

Cheers,

Jeremy

Wow, I'm drooling over that 1KZ turbo diesel...

$3500 is a little too hard to swallow right now. Plus all the other things you'd have to swap out. Maybe someday...

I saved this seller on ebay in case anything ever happened to one of my engines. The reason I saved them is because they have great reviews, (1710) 100% positive feedback, and their prices seem reasonable.

I don't see any 5VZFE's in their store, but it might be worth giving them a call or dropping an email in case you need other options.

I've never done business with them, but that much positive feedback for a low mileage engine seller on ebay is pretty impressive.

Try G&S Cruiser Parts. They are in Chilliwack BC and specialize in JDM parts. Gerg and Sheldon are absolutely top shelf to deal with.

DO NOT purchase a 2LT diesel. They are the 2.4 lt diesels that are installed in the JDM et al Surfs (4Runner). Very prone to head problems due to overheating. In Canada, we can import and license JDMs once they are 15 years old. JDMs are very popular in the Vancouver area. You see one every few minutes on the freeway. So, much experience with the engines.
