Recoloring interior of 3rd gen 4runner...PICS included
#146
Newest part just came in...the wood grain center piece. These will be the only wood pieces in the car although I know there are more out there. The next owner can worry about getting the rest if they want 'em. The gunmetal pieces I'll be keeping for my next 4runner in the future

Day 11 Update
Another update after a while since the last. I have primered all of the random kick panels and pillar pieces. I painted a majority of them black already. There is only one left to paint but I'm taking a summer school class and its been raining so I haven't been able to start on the door panels nor the last rear panel piece. Heres a shot of what I've done so far. Almost done!

Only thing more complete would be black seating

Well it'd be hard to sell the car if the interior was three different colors. It'd be harder to sell if it had two colors and primer colored panels. I need to make it into a finished product to sell it. I do plan on getting another 4runner in the later future so this will give me experience for the next. Everyone keep a lookout...I'll be posting a lot of gray interior pieces on the market place in the coming week.

lookin' good tv... I don't remeber if you've changed the headliner yet or not but IMO leaving it oak would be a nice contrast...
I should be getting my baby back from the body shop in a few weeks so I may start my recolouring also... thanks again for the inspiration....

edit: took a look at the carpet pics again the oak seats look good against the black... all I'd do is paint the plastic parts on the seat frames and the oak will really pop...

Day 12...not really though but chronologically it is. Anyway most of the panels are done. This completes almost everything except the floor mats. Now I just have a bunch of stuff to sell and a few odds and ends to tie up on this car. Maybe someone can finish the work that I've done if I try to sell the rig on the forum.

I dyed my carpet black intially with RIT but it was burple so I then painted it with spray paint vinyl and carpet to get the final black dark. It made it all a nice deep black.
I also painted the dash with the same spray paint. Worked very well.

Finale...
As of today the 4runner is no more. Project black interior complete. My parents have taken her in and traded her in. I tried to fight so I could sell her here on yotatech. They just didn't want to deal with it. Here are the final pictures.

More to come in the next post...

Finale Part II
Here is the rest...

That's it. Time to answer some questions. I hope I didn't inspire anyone to undertake this. It was real nice but the upkeep and maintenance isn't worth it if its a DD.

You're right, RIT is only not Burple if you do it by the soaking method. Washing machine turned gray the first time. Spray bottle made it purple and second washing machine still kept it a faded black. I would have sprayed it with black interior spray but since the car is now traded in, I decided not to do it. Definately keeping notes for when I come back to YT. I'll do everythign right the first time and with the right financial resources.
