Recalled truck has a dangerous problem

Hi folks,

I wanted to put out there a problem that I experienced with my 2003 Tacoma 4X4 recently due to the frame corrosion recall.

I had a tire go bad on the left front of the truck. I got the factory jack out and set it in the correct place on the frame per the owner’s manual (I was on level pavement). I loosened the lug nuts and began cranking the jack, after the wheel was an inch off the ground the jack slipped off the frame due to the greasy corrosion treatment. I tried a second time and the same thing happened. I finally went and got a 3 ton roller jack and a block of wood and jacked it from the a-arm...problem solved, but if I was on the road I would of had that luxury.

I don't know if any one else has noticed this but I wanted to put this out there as a FYI so no one ends up hurt.

Wipe off the greasy spot first. No different than if it had road sludge etc in the same spot.

Frame corrosion? Hmm no problems here, but I'm in CA

Get a high lift jack and you'll be set for any situation

The stuff does not wipe off with out a solvent. Its kind of like tar. It never really dries either from what Toyota said. I do not like it but I guess its better than frame rot!

Yeah Toyota had a recall for certain year Tacomas for frame corrosion... if you lived in states that salt the roads in winter.

I have a lift jack, I just like to use the factory jack in the cab to make sure it works every now and then. I drop the spare and check it too about once a year. I'm glad I keep it aired up now that I have needed it.

I guess it would not hurt to keep a small hydro jack in the tool box for that reason.
