Toyota Recalls Over 750,000 Trucks, SUVs;Suspension Flaws

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
May 17, 2005 3:28 p.m.

WASHINGTON (AP)--Toyota Motor Corp. (TM), in one of its largest safety recalls ever, said Tuesday it is recalling more than 750,000 pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles because of problems with the front suspension that could hinder steering.

The company said the recall covers 774,856 vehicles in the U.S., including the 2001-2004 model years of the Tacoma, the 2001-2002 versions of the 4Runner and the 2002-2004 model years of the Tundra and Sequoia.

Toyota said the surface of a ball joint which connects to the front suspension may have been scratched when it was manufactured, which could lead to wear and tear over time.

Any excessive wear or looseness in the joint could force drivers to exert more effort when steering, allow the vehicle to drift and increase the amount of noise from the suspension.

Ming-Jou Chen, a Toyota spokeswoman, said the company had confirmed six cases in which the condition existed in the suspension. There have been no injuries associated with the problems.

Toyota said it planned to conduct a similar recall of the affected vehicles in Canada, Japan, Australia and other countries, but did not immediately have the number of vehicles that would be covered outside the U.S.

Chen said it was one of the largest recalls in company history.

In 1992, Toyota recalled about 550,000 Camrys from the 1987-1990 model years because of the potential for power door locks to malfunction and lock passengers out of or inside the vehicles.

In 2002, the company recalled nearly 400,000 subcompact and minicar vehicles exported to the U.S., Europe and Canada because of improperly designed brake fluid pipes.

In Tuesday's recall of trucks and SUVs, owners will be notified beginning in July and will be able to have the problem fixed at no cost, Chen said.

Ugh. At least it's no like the fact that the rear doors could fall off of my friends Ford Focus, and the other 3 recalls she had in the last 2 years.

Stop Calling!!!!

Ok here is the deal...

I work at a Toyota dealership. We didn't find out about this until today (May 18th 2005). We do not know what cars it will effect. Toyota will contact you with a "SSB." When you get this notice in the mail, call you dealership and make an appoiment. From what I picked up from my regional leader, it affects people that do major wheeling.

The dealerships will not have any information on this until Toyota tells us. So please for the sake of the people at the dealership, please don't call us asking if your rig is one of them. We are overwhelmed with phone calls about this already.

Thank you! As soon as I get more information about this I'll post it.

I don't know about that. I head that it might have to do with the upper ball joint. I'll post more soon.

Dave Letterman turned it into a top 10 list tonight. Not a very funny top 10 but still... OUCH.

It'll be interesting to see what reasons they come up with to deny recall benefits for anyone with any kind of lift or big tires... I'll stay tuned.

Post up your experiences when you go in for the free work.

"Were Gonna Die"

I bet all the GM/Chrylser/Ford Forums are having a field day with this recall...

Eh.... Recalls happen and I still think Toyota has had fewer than other manufacturers.... But this does bring up a solid point, is Toyota worrying about Quantity now instead of Quality?

I don't know, but think about HOW MANY vehicles Toyota produces...sooner or later, there's going to be something. Compare this with other manufacturers, and Toyota still comes out smelling pretty sweet, IMO. Maybe I'm being a bit "Pollyanna" about it, but I'm not too worried...

Does'nt sound like anything to be in a hurry about, though I do hope they don't grumble about my little 1" coil spacers. In any case, I think I'll put some more miles on it before I take it in. Maybe by then it will need realignment anyway

Toyota no longer manufactures such quality as your 82 or my 87. They've learned they can manufacture crap and still sell it, because is says 'Toyota' on it.

And yes, expect to have this recall denied if you've over loaded the suspension by adding an extra cupholder.

Puhlease, no recalls when made in Japan? Did you actually look or were you waiting for someone to take you by the hand? My last Toyota was made in Japan and it had several recalls (all minor and pointless since they were wear items). Recalls happen all the time, only the big ones get noticed.
