Rear main.......

Well, I think my rear main is leaking on my 3.slow. It started using oil. Nothing on the ground when it sits over night, but you can see an occaisional drip when its at idle. Barely touches oil in town, but goes through about 1/2 qt. in 500 mi. @ highway speed. Engine only has 78k. I'm going to bring it in next week and have it checked out. Anyone have a rear main replaced on one of these things????
Any ideas on what I can expect to pay for a repair??

Havent replaced mine yet(waiting for clutch to go), but mine drops about 2qts. every 1000 miles. I just hit 230,000 and the clutch should be gone within 20,000 miles.

How much it will cost you...

I think I going to have the same problem soon. I went to JiffyLube to get my oil and filter changed, and the grease monkey down there said that he saw some residue near my rear main seal... So possibly it is leaking.. but Not using any oil at all yet. I got scared when I first found out so I went over to a Toyota stealership and they quoted me about $750... I think the tranny/motor need(s) to be pulled. I just got a new clutch so I don't know when I will be servicing the seal, however, if it starts leaking more after i switch over to synthetic, I may be prompted to replace the seal sooner.

My toy has 230k, motor has about 75k

here is another post about the rear main seal and the stuff i use to help mine with leaking.

Get some Bearin Seal made by Solder Seal. That stuff should help seal up the rear main.I add it every other other change.

Rear main leak.........

Hey guys,

Just a heads up. Make sure its not the valve covers leaking and dripping down the back of the motor.

My drivers side valve cover leaks at the lowest point near the firewall. The leak runs down the back of the motor to show up on the transmission bell housing just like a rear main leak.

A friend is in the Quick Lube Industry and he mis-diagnosed the problem.

Get an adjustable mirror and take a look back there just to be certain!!

If you cant see then reach your hand back there, on a cold engine that is............ Hopefully you grab some oil.....
