recently replaced rear axle seals and wheel bearings on my 99 4Runner Limited and after everything is back together my rear brakes are really hot and smell .brakes are dragging.not sure but i think the emergency brake assembly that goes over the self adjusting star has a spring that i may installed it on the wrong spot because with the drums off when the brake pedal is pressed the tab that moves the adjuster star gets wedge against the side of the star instead of staying on top of it and is pushing the brake shoes appart.does anyone knows or have a picture of where the spring goes on the shoe side.when everything is back together you can't see the spring because it goes behind the emergency brake level.also since the drums were covered with grease and gear oil for a while i had them turned in a lathe and now they shake when apply brakes.i bought a new set of drums but still shaking .when i bought the old ones they were vibrating like that and i had them turned and they were fine after that.is it possible the new ones aren't perfectly round? should i bring them back and get new ones or get them turned? is it possible the machine shop that pressed the bearings and retainers bent the axles or is that unlikely? going to take evrything appart and install new adjusters and hope it works fine. I need help please

out of round drums, yes

the diagram should help with the e-brake and adjuster.

 

that's what i was thinking,out of round drums,put everything together the way i think should be and not overheating or burn brake smell anymore so that's good but for the bad part still shaking it's less but still doing it.tomorrow will return the drums and get new ones and let's see what happens

 

Not sure if this will help, but here is a photo of my '99 Tacoma rear brake install:

 

If you don`t torque the lug nuts even it can cause a vibration just like warped drums.

Another thing drums must be stored laying flat they will warp if stored in the vertical position .

 

tantacoma thanks for the picture,can't really see the spring that goes behind the e-brake level but i think i have it on the correct location now.

 

I've been trying to torque them even and in the right pattern,its raining now but when it stops I'll return the drums and get new ones,I think they are out of round .I was going to have them turned but I'll try new ones first

 

well i returned the autozone drums and got new ones from advanced auto and the problem is gone thanks guys

 

Does this apply to solid steel drums or just jello drums?

 

No the jello drums are going to be just fine because they will rebound back into shape where the steel ones will not.

This was proved to me by the Raybestos district rep back in the early seventies .

A vendor was storing the drums incorrect and having all kinds of issues and blaming the drums.

Pretty much found out he owned several thousand pounds of scrap.
