My Rear Anti-Lock warning light came on about 3 or 4 days ago...what might be wrong?

Thanks!

I've heard that the only thing they do at the dealerships is hook up a computerized thingy and reset the light...is that true?

I am taking it to a local mechanic on Monday, should I have him look at it?

Thanks!

Before you let the dealer touch your truck try this.

Locate and remove the wheel speed sensor(s) from the rear axle. It is magnetic and can collect metal shavings that are normally shed from the bearings and gears. These shavings if they build up enough can mask the speed sensor ring pulses.

Wipe the end off and reinstall it. Reset the ABS ECU by disonnecting the battery and see if the fault clears. You might get lucky as this is a common problem with wheel speed sensors on ABS systems.

Where are the wheel speed sensors? Is it obvious, or would it be listed in the manual or something? I also have a repair manual that may have it in there aswell...but its just magnetic...no unscrewing or aligning or anything...I don't want to mess it up :pat:

Thanks man, I'll check into that as long as it isn't a big ordeal.

I appreciate it.

I do not know how your Gen 4Runner is configured so I do not know where it or they are.

Crawl under the truck and look for them. If you have one it should be on the diff housing somewhere. If you have two they would normally be located near the wheels in the axle housing.

It will look like a plug held in by a single screw or bolt with a wire coming out of it. Undo the screw and pull it out. Wipe it off, put it back in and see if you get lucky.

The 2nd gens come in 2 flavors, 2wheel rear ABS and 4 wheel abs. If you have 2wheel abs then there is 1 sensor right on top of the diff. If you have 4wheel abs, then like gadget said, each wheel has a sensor. A chiltons or something will tell you how to test the sensor to see if it is bad.

Yeah, I bet it's the sensor gadget mention. Mind went out 2 years ago. The dealer charged me $172.00 for parts and labor. They also charged me $69.00 just to check to see what was bad even tho I told them that the speed sensor was bad. Needless to say I never went back to that dealer again. Good luck.

So do you think I should just take it somewhere to get it all checked out and fixed or check the sensors myself?

Either way it sounds like the cost is gonna be the same so I would just rather have them do it so I don't screw anything else up.

What do you think? Should I take it to an authorized dealer or just another dealer that I know does good work?

Thanks guys!!

BTW: I got my plugs changed, everything is running perfect now.

Did you whipe the end of the sensor(s) off yet?????????

Don't let anyone touch it until you try that.

My suggestion is to look at a chiltons and decide for yourself whether it's something you want to do by yourself or have somebody else do it. Only you can decide that. I can understand your apprehension to doing stuff yourself, but we all started somewhere.

I got newfield CVs installed and had my breaks bleed yesterday, now My ABS light is on in the dash. Is this a simular problem, The mechanic said I had mud in my back break lines. The last time I changed CV myself I had no light. I will try the speed sensor cleaning tip to see if it changes. Keep me posted 4x4Fink and let me know if that fixed it.

Abs Light Came On After Mechanic Bled My Rear Brakes

I just had a local shop install my lift kits and I asked them to install the SS breakline that Rear Downey coils came with. After bleeding the rear brakes and installing the SS line, my ABS light came on. The mechanics put more oil and disconnected the batteries for about 20 min and still the light is on.
I drove it today and returned it to the mechanic. They hooked up a computer to it and the code told them that it is the rear passenger side sensor that is bad. They disassembled it and saw that nothing wrong with it and they told me that they couldn't have damaged it because they never touched it in the process of lifting the truck.

Now, I have to drive around with no ABS. I know this is an old thread, but can anyone suggest a fix? How much is a sensor and is it something I can install myself? Can anyone suggest what is wrong with it?

Thanks

p.s. On hind sight, I should have installed the lift kit myself and save me the trouble. But then again, could it be that the sensor was going anyway? The mechanic offered to install it for free if I get the sensor, but I am not really sure if it is the sensor that is bad. I checked all the connections this morning and they seemed fine to me.

Help!!!

I had my ABS light come on and I cleaned the sensors, unplugged my battery and no more ABS light, we'll see if stays that way, but looking good so far.
