Question about steering gearbox
#4
What you may want to try if all the bolts are hard to get at and rusted like mine were is just take the gear shaft out of the 2 gearboxes takes 5 mins as compared to the 2 days it would have taken me to get the gearbox out. BUT i took a shaft out of a 89 runner and tried to put it in my 93 and voila the two shafts were different (same in every way cept one had 3 teeth the other 4). So what i did was just find a junked 93 runner and got the shaft out of that. I dunno if the 91 has 4 teeth or not, the 88 does but the 91 might have 3 like mine. Its worth it to check just to save the trouble. If you do got this route you have to remove the 3 bolts holding it to the chasis, and you have to play around with it to get it back in. Will require a hammer and it only goes in one way right, other ways and you get like 1 turn in your steering wheel. Just try seating the teeth in in different posisitions. Just a little tip in case you wanna try this, but it might not be compatible.

I wouldn't try goofing with any of those shafts unless you know what you're doing. I tried doing what Squishy said up above a couple years ago. I got the shafts swapped, the whole thing put back together, cranked up the truck & my steering wheel did circles without a single movement in the front end except for the steering shaft. I just bought the $399 lifetime replacement sucker from Allpro Offroad. Haven't had any problems since I got it a year ago.

I wasnt too keen about fooling around with it either, but a trusty toyota mech had done it before and told me what to do. I would not by any means jury rig something up for something as important as steering. But what i was trying to say is if you have the exact same gearboxes and getting it off the truck is a big job ( I would have had to remove my radiator and fabricate new lines) then replacing the shafts will work and save you a lot of trouble. But if you box comes off easily then by all means replace the box.
