Question about gasket and pipe(egr?)

Ok. There is a small pipe that runs form one side of the motor around the back and attatches to the intake manifold about half way down. I got the gasket kit(ITE) and it doesn't seem to have a gasket for this fitting. I guess the question is can I just use blue rtv? Should I used Red(High temp)? Or do I NEED to get that gasket? What is this pipe for? I am guessing EGR or something like that. Maybe a water pipe. It comes off of the passenger side and goes back to the manifold. I don't know where it actually comes from because I have the motor apart.

Thanks for the help,
Jason

which engine?

some engines had air injection, a pipe goes from a smog pump to the exhaust manifold. the EGR pipe is a straight piece that goes from the EGR valve to the port on top the intake manifold.

Nope. This metal pipe comes from the bottom of the intake manifold and goes around the back of the engine and to the drivers side then a piece of rubber hose connects to it. The pipe and hose are about 3/4" in diameter. The pipe runs along the back of the motor with the metal pipe that comes off of the exhaust manifold. The motor is a 22re. Seems to me this would be a water type pipe as it is attatched to a rubber hose. Why they didn't send a gasket who knows.

Thanks. Hopefully this explains it better.

That sounds like a coolant pipe and should have an o-ring between the pipe and intake manifold. Let me see if I can find a pic and see if we're talking about the same thing....

Exactly the one. so it should have an o ring? I'll try to find it in the gasket kit. I don't need any aditional sealer? I had 2 for those metal looking gaskets that are for high temps and I used them on both ends of the pipe of the same size that runs off of the exhaust manifold. Hope I have them right. I have 2 extra silver gaskets in the kit and no clue where they go. Will I have extra gaskets?

Thanks so much for the help,
Jason

Yup, an o-ring sits in that recessed area of the manifold and no sealer is needed. Not sure about the silver gaskets though.

i used a little gray RTV on the o-ring on my coolant pipe, then torqued the bolts down nic e and tight, as the o-ring was wider than the recess. holding up fine so far

I uess have the o ring them as the one i have is bigger than the recess. I don't know why it wouldn't be the actual size of the recess. Well I guess I'll either get another ont or use that one and sone flexible gasket former.
