I agree....
Best thing would be to cut the tape around the wires to allow you to make the connection farther up when soldering.
Then just retape the whole bundle of wires after.

Obviously if you use wire taps or crimp connectors, it doesn't matter.

 

On a side note....
anyone have or use that cold soldering thing from the infomercials?
It looks pretty cool, I get tired of waiting for my iron to warm up for a quick little project. - that and burning my hands and carpet and things.

Apparently available at Radio Shack -- thus worth a try since it'd be an easy return.

 

Is there any way to remove the ECU from the truck, solder the FTC to it and reiinstall it? I was hoping there was a quick disconnect for the ECU.

Message bump.

 

You don't need to remove the ECU to do the mod.
You are just splicing into the connector so detach it from the ECU and then solder in the new connections and reattach.

Undo the connector on the ECU......


Cut or tap into the wire (only cut the purple wire!!!)....


Solder your connection....


and plug it back in when you are done.

To tap for a solder connection I usually use the solder iron to melt the wire insulation in the area I want to tap into (can also be done with a razor blade but you risk cutting part of the the wire as well). Be sure to clean the tip well after doing this, the insulation likes to stick to the iron and turn the tip black.

Read the section on "Butt Soldering" and "Tap Soldering".....these are the two you should be using.
