Question power rear window???

My rear window has worked just fine untill recently. All of a sudden it only works going up and not down. Maybe just a coincidence, but it stopped working after replacing my liscence plate lights. Suggestions???

Blown fuse maybe? Don't have a 4runner so I don't know all the specifics but that's what I can think of, or maybe a short?

slick,

try searching the term "rear panel removal" and every variation you can think of. several members have had this problem w/ the window not rolling up and down. you'll have to examine the window mechanism from the back. several threads discuss how to remove the panel.

It always helps to tell us what year. In my 85 I had that problem reglarly from the console switch, but not the key. Road debris would break the wires where the harness goes from the tailgate to the body. I had to fix it at least every 3 years. If it goes one way but not the other, both from the key and the switch in the console, the problem is probably in the tailgate.

You're in Winterpeg, it's probably just frozen and anyway in a few months the flies will be out and you won't want the window down.

More seriously it could be the control module, it has a relay for up and one for down. If it still works one way the motor is obviously OK. The control module just swaps the polarity to the motor so it runs the opposite way. Try removing the inner panel and lube the bits that move, see if that helps.

I have the service manual in pdf for 2nd gen 4runners, if you want a copy send me an email address.

Edit, just noticed you have a '96, my manual may not help, but you're welcome to try it.

mine is messed up to it wont go up and down and gets no power to it. i was told it was the relay switch and if a shop replaced it the labor would be a crazy amount so i just havent got it fixed and it started messin up about a year ago

If it is a relay the labour to change that would be less than 1 hour, but I've heard the control module is an expensive part. The module contains 4 or 5 relays and a bunch of other resistors and stuff, and I don't think you can just replace one relay.

The relay box is a known gripe on the all the gen2. I have seen posts on other boards that cover how to remove and repiar the box. It comes down to 1 or 2 of the relays going out and they are not the best relays to begin with....the post I saw used replacement relays from RADIO SHACK.. Check 4x4 wire I think that is where I saw it...

Just amazing. I remember when nothing had a "control module" and what a coincidence, never broke down either.

no...i believe you!

mine did the the same thing....only, mine did the "auto roll down" feature...it would NOT go up....ended up using a 12v "wall wart" to roll it up...then ordered a "new used" relay box 'cos I didn't like the $35x.xx that the dealer wanted for the part. - GOT the part....and rehooked up the motor....and....it had FIXED itself!

crazy, but true. It was REALLY freaking cold when that happened - which was preceded by really warm...and I wheeled...got REALLY muddy, then sprayed the truck off, it got SUPA cold (zero and stuff) then all my locks froze, then I used de-icer....then the window thing. Then it "healed" itself...

I chock it up to the 4x4 pixies!

When mine wasn't working it was a little cold, not too bad though(-25,-35windchill). It was working the day before so it wasn't frozen. When I pushed up I could hear the motor so I knew that it was still working, but down, well a whole lotta nothing. Then two days later I pushed the button for no apparent reason and magical ˟˟˟˟˟˟ing things happened. It's a good thing I love my truck, or else I would have smashed the damn window. Oh ya, -40,-50 windchill is what cold is here in Winterpeg
