In the picture below, you'll see oil seeping out of an air hose. I've traced it back to what appears to be a PCV. Am I on the right track and if so, would anyone happen to have a part number? Or are all the PCVs coming up in my google searches compatible?

That is not a PCV. The smaller tube slips onto a nipple that is molded into the larger breather tube.

 

Right, I understand. The part that I'm referring to is not pictured. I've only referenced the picture to identify which air hose has the issue.

I've traced the hose back to the driver side valve cover near the fire wall. That's the PCV I'm trying to determine what part number is correct.

 

Use Rock Auto or the Dealership. For most things I use the dealership, especially small stuff like this.

I thought my pcv was on the passenger side valve cover. But even though I have a new one, I haven't installed it yet. It's going to be part of doing the valve cover gaskets and some other stuff, so I'm waiting for better weather...

 

The hose in the original post pic does not go to the pcv.


83- The pcv is indeed in the right side valve cover. The hose for it runs to a port in the intake just behind the throttle body on the side towards the front of the truck. Get the grommet too, if you're going to replace the pcv and be prepared for it to come out in pieces.

 

The PCV valve is located at the front of the passenger side valve cover. I'll look at where that tube goes when I get home later today.

Yep like she said, get the grommet too! And try not to let the pieces fall into the engine...

 

Exactly! I have a cheap little grabber that works great for that stuff. Long skinny thing that's got little claws that come out when you depress the holding end and grip when you let go.

That non-pcv? Passive valve cover vent? Got a little blow-by? I don't really know my back behind the engine stuff yet, am still working on messing up the parts I can get to. I have a little blow-by too. Not much, but it's there.

 

That's why I'm waiting until I do my valve cover gaskets to change the pcv and spark plugs & grommets...I'll just do it when I have the covers off.

Yeah I understand being concerned with that oil at the airbox. It's probably actually nothing to worry about...but it's always best to understand what's going on, then decide if you can live with it, or want to fix it.

 

I had this happening on my 96 5vz-fe, i thought it looked recent and I had just noticed that I overfilled my oil by about a quart so I thought it was related. As a precaution I pulled my PCV valve and cleaned it out with some carb cleaner, it seemed to rattle just fine before and after. I made a note to purchase another one and keep an eye on the airpipe. On mine I noticed where its coming into the air pipe it runs down towards the air filter and there is a j hook style "catch can" area that is built into the air pipe behind the air filter. I kind of thought it was normal at that point and that catchment was for any oil that seeped into the airpipe via that hose off the drivers side valve cover. just my $0.02.

 

Most likely blowby from bad/worn valve stem seals. Try a high mileage oil such as Maxlife to help condition the seals but the ultimate fix is to replace them.

 

wanted to comment on this trouble of replacing the grommet and an old crappy non-oem plastic pcv , they were supper brittle and stuck. had to break them into pieces to remove. I use a shop vac while doing so and it kept all the small pieces from dropping down into the valve cover., the last large grommet peice was fished out with needle nose as shop vac assist. USED the OEM PCV, they have metal base cyllinder, not plastic.
--MY PCV issue is that the hose from the pcv to the plenum is "COLLAPSING" due to the suction of intake....i'm thinking this is due to blockage from the "OTHER" vent.. where might that be??
