Those of you have installed the PCV catch can mod.

Mod consists of an [ inline water filter placed in the PCV line ]

How much oil do you accumulate in the bottle/container?

And how often mileage wise, do you dump it?

Seem's like I dump the bottle on my 4Runner twice between oil changes, only about 1.5 oz. of oil in the bottle each time.

The catch can, is used to catch oil that is usually burnt in the combustion chamber, pulled through the PCV valve.

Adding the catchcan, keeps the oil out of the combustion chambers, resulting in a cleaner burn, longer plug life, hopefully better performance, by having a clean combustion chamber, only fuel burnt, not oil.

 

Do you have any pics of how you did yours?

 

I helped my buddy do his on his Trans Am. Was pretty easy

 

I thought that a little oil in the top end was a good thing. really if you are catching a lot of oil it is a sign that you need new rings, because of blow by.

 

I've yet to see a drop of anything in mine.

I put this oil catch can on the breather line that goes from the drivers side valve cover to the front of the throttle body. It's the one that is responsible for all that crud that covers your TB butterfly valve and intake over time. But so far no oil, maybe when the truck gets in a steep angle there will be some show up?


There is also a breather vent for the other valve cover but I didn't put a can on that one because it dumps out after the TB and my water/methanol injection nozzle so I'm pretty sure that will keep everything clean from that point on.

if a very clean pcv valve after 30k miles is a sign of me not sucking up much oil is legit, i think i am ok..

hmmm... interesting it seems like all/most of you guys that have done this mod are running 3.4L /5vzes... my 3.0 does'nt seem to be blasting that much crud at all...

 

I usually put some wadded put scotchbrite/steel wool in as most of the time the oil can pass thru that can layout as oil vapor, the medium will help catch and collect what might be passing thru.

 

so, as i am interested in doing this mod (actually going to home depot later today), everybody says to remove the small filter that's inside the collector, but did you do this and then put in the steel wool?

The little filter thats inside might not be up to taking on the properties of oil...

I always fill the catchcan with steel wool and it makes a pretty big difference as the really sticky residue clings to it rather than the intake and TB. I also suggest mounting it securely, so that it doesn't bounce around as when it fills a bit a solid bump can toss the oil into the vacuum stream and it will suck it up.

after cleaning the TB on the 4runner recently I knew I needed to install one so this thread hit me with a reminder...

i installed one in my integra. do not use steel wool for a filtrate unless you put a small screen filter in the outlet hose side of the can. but yes there needs to be something in there to stop the flow of all of the small oil particles in the pcv system that get by the pcv valve. i used small aluminum baffles with 1/16" holes throughout the baffles when i fabed mine up. the air needs to go around baffles or through filtrate like a maze so that it does not just blow through. but with my integra i would empty it like every other day just to be sure but then again i was revving up to 8300 rpm.
do a ebay catch can search, also you can fab one up out of one of those alum. water bottles they sell in the stores. also there are many how to's on honda websites.

I have yet to need a filter on the outlet hose when using steel wool as long as you change it out with the oil once in a while...

If you want to go a step further like I do on track prepared cars you can sandwich the steel wool between screens that fit the given catch can. This provides a dense filter medium that doesn't hurt flow.
