Painting a TJM bumper

i'm gonna order the tjm t17 bumper, but i want to paint it to match my truck. is the finish that comes on it a powder coat or paint, and if it's paint, does it need to be stripped to bare metal before painting?

TJM's are powder coated. It needs to be scuffed up so the paint can grab it. Bare metal should be primed prior to color coat. PM Bahachem. He's the resident paint expert (in my mind anyway)

doesn't powdercoating flake off easily once it chips. someone correct me if i'm wrong. if that's the case, wouldn't you need to take it completely off so that your'e not painting over a bunch of flaking powder coat?

does anyone happen to know of tjm will sell any of their bumpers unfinished, just bare metal?

Powdercoating generally won't chip if applied correctly. It will dent if the metal gets dented and not crack - it's THAT durable - when applied correctly.

It will chip and come off if not baked at a high enough temperature. This just happened to some material my buddy was PC'ing. Their oven was only getting up to 225 when it actually needed to get to 400.

I doubt they will sell them raw, since they come the whole way from Australia. There would be a good bit of surface rust on it by the time it arrived here unless they really oiled it down...

You need to ask him and he'll know exactly what you need to do as he painted his ARB Sahara to match his rig and did exactly what you are looking at doing.
