I decied to repaint the black pieces (luggage rack, pillar area on doors, rear spoiler) I went and bought DupliColor OEM Trim Paint. Says it restores trim back to OEM black. Well I did the rear spoiler and it was just their cheap a$$ flat black but at 5x's more expensive. After painting the spoiler it looked the same! I went to Home Depot and bought the auto primer and satin black by Rustoleum. Came out looking pretty good. Just a hint of shine but not too glossy or looking too flat. When it stays dry for a few days I am going to do the rest of the truck.

i love rustoleum satin black, thats what my bumper is, and now my top, and just about all the other black parts

 

I've never had a lot of luck with DupliColor. Some folks swear by it though.

 

The only think i can say about them is they have a good nozzle that throws a flat spray pattern and is adjustable. They offer a huge line of paints. But I start to feel many of them are the same just relabled and priced differently.

 

When you go to paint the luggage rack and other plastic pieces, don't use home depot cheapo spray paint. It WILL flake off and make a mess. The previous owner of my 89 4Runner did this, and it started cracking and coming off. It looked terrible.

Best bet is to go to an autobody store, and get the best paint you can. Find out from them what paint you will need to paint on plastic, and make it stick for good.

From what I have read and seen, SEM paints are the best. They are a little more spendy, but $15 for a can of paint is better than $150 for a piece of plastic.

 

I looked at what types there were and these seem to be the best they have around here for durability. These cans were about $7.00 a pop and the only semi gloss they had at Home Depot and autoparts. I am not using the $.99 cans. The DupliColor Trim Paint was about $7 or $8 dollars and seemed to just be flat black. I got a sanding block to rough it up, primer and then the paint in a few good light coats. I am still thinking about using a bedliner in an aersol form for the luggage rack.

 

Many folks will shine their trim will all sorts of products before deciding to re-paint. Most of these are / wax silicone based and keep paint form sticking. Prep and good paint is the key to making it work.
