Went to Sears today to look for pads that attach to my Bosche random-orbital sander and there they were: $7 for the pair of waxing & buffing. Meguiars & Griott's were significantly more.

Got to wash it now and get to work.

Seems like I remember doing this to a '31 Pontiac as a kid.

 

Joel I'd like to see before and after pics. My clearcoat is peeling on the hood and roof but i'd like to do the rest of my truck.

 

If I'd ever get the roll of film developed and digitized, I'd have some great "before" pics from spring break. I went from desert to snow to muddy desert. Number 1 wife got a lot of comments when she drove the 4Runner to her school and her women's meetings.

I have the digital camera from school this weekend so I should be able to get the pics on.

I'd sure like to get together and compare vehicles and notes...but not this weekend. Wife #1 is gone and I'm going to try my hand at installing the Toy Leather kit I bought last year on Ebay. I just have to get a pair of hog-ring pliers and some hog-rings.

Of course if you want to help...

 

Sounds like fun. I have no idea how to do upholstery. That is very evident by the upholstery in my 67 Mustang Fastback.

 

Vic, I've been working on it this morning and my paint/clearcoat is worse off than I thought. I'm beginning to get significant number of pits in the clearcoat and found an area about the size of a nickel where the clearcoat had flaked off. The wax job may put off the inevitable, but it's still going to need a paintjob by next year.

Might be a good time to get those dings done, strip the weather stripping, emblems, etc, and get the job done right.

You swear by "claying" your finish first. Do you think it might make things worse or better?

 

Hehe - can't be any worse than my paint. My whole hood looks like a brillo pad was taken to it. I tried cleaning it and waxing it but then the wax swirls are permanently imbedded in the peeled areas. Oops.

If your clear coat is flaking, I'm not sure.

You could try, the clay will make the surface smoother, but it sounds like you have some damage starting in.

I'll just get the whole thing finished today...almost done already. But I'll have to start shopping around for new paintjob. I could just get the top & hood done. It would be cheaper and the rest of the paint isn't that bad....yet.

Yes, white is so easy to take care of.
That is why this is my 3rd white Toyota.

 

Joel I was planning to just do my hood and roof also. You can easily see yourself in the reflection of the side paint but man is my roof and hood dead. Originally I shopped for silver or tan paint but this was the only 4Runner I could find with all the options I wanted and cloth interior. I wish I had a garage so this paint issue wouldn't exist. :pat:

My 93 Toy Pickup was white. It would get washed twice a year...when Julia got to drive it. It never looked dirty. Only color for the desert.
