Going to attempt to make the auto A340F in my 98 4runner manually shifted via paddles. After turbocharging it I need to have more control over the amount of throttle vs speed without the passing gear/kickdown getting in the way. Also I just like manual transmissions and this is the next best thing without swapping one in. Progress might be slow, but determined to accomplish this.

After talking with my collaborator over the last week looks like this project is going to happen. Paddles showed up today and he emailed me the first blueprint for the control box. Needs to be built and tested, just need time, which is in short supply.

Interested in see how this works out. I would be interested in this if it works well.

It would need to be option for sure, be able to go back into regular mode for normal driving at the flip of a switch.

Also, Someone else to consider taking control over while in there is the lockup converter. I would like it to be engaged in more then just overdrive but I don't think it will stand up to WOT so it would need to be turned off anytime the throttle is above ~25% or the brakes are pressed.

There will be a 2pdt on/on rocker or rotary switch. Position 1 ECM controlled, position 2 paddle shift.

As far as the lockup, maybe 3 positions, haven't come to a conclusion yet because I will need to road test it and play with it more to make it to my liking.
1. Stock ECM controlled
2. A manual on/off switch
3. Race/whatever mode, under WOT will lock in 2,3,4

Rough draft, basic idea, just need a flux capacitor.

 

One week later got a daft done of the circuit.

 

Colors I chose for the LED's in the gear indicator that will probably go somewhere on top of the steering column or inside the cluster somewhere.

One of the engineers for a company I worked for figured out how to do this on a car we built. It was for a GM 4l80 behind a LS3. And we were using a GM performance transmision controller that allowed the manual shifting, controlled by a toggle switch, to switch between manual and auto shifting. But the idea was cool and it worked well in the dirt for engine braking. Great new idea, keep at it man!

 

Is there going to be an led for a park or neutral?

 

No, just the stock ones in the dash. Park, neutral, reverse are not affected by this kind of control. In paddle/manual mode the stock shifter will be put into drive and then select the toggle switch to manual mode, then good to go up and down all you want.
