Prior to installing the new filter, take some of the new oil, put it on your fingertip, and rub a coat of the new oil on the rubber gasket seal on the new filter. That will help to ensure a proper seal. Granted I have only ever done oil changes on my 2.7 and my dad's 22RE. I'm guessing it's somewhat easier to get to the filter on the 4 bangers? One reason I wouldn't have a Toyota V6. They are significantly harder to work on.

Also, as stated above with the filter relocation mod. You will be able to add almost another full quart of oil capacity by doing that. My filter relocations are routed to the passenger side inner fender. Good luck!

I also have the luxury of working under my truck from a garage pit!

Thanks for the kind words. I think the thing that made it worse was in fact that it was 11:00 PM and the truck was dumping oil on the driveway. I was SO tired and just started to panic. My girlfriend came over and got me and calmed me down though and it was a lot better. She just said we can fix it right? we can clean the oil up right? don't worry we can fix all this stuff it's just a truck. She's pretty cool except now she calles it "the oil change incident"

And as with this one, hopefully all are mistakes are small.

2) Do the oil changes yourself and take the skid plate off with every oil change and you will have to angle your arm in grab firm give it a good twist and it will come loose.

3) Oil change places: some porters don't always care about your truck (at all) but believe me, they care about their 1.3 Litre rust bucket honda civic with a idiot muffler ( A 15 HP increase!!!!, whatever). And becasue they really don't care they often royally mess things up ON YOUR RIDE.
AND it ends up costing YOU a ton of money because they are stupid jack asses.

4)Remember, you care more about your truck than they do

5) if you can, do the work yourself, if not, find someone you trust.

"oil change incident" thats good....

Funny you say that. It's really the little stuff that really pisses me off too...

Man, I have had several incidents every week it seems with my 99' SR5
1) "Incidnet involving a Cracked off a bolt, and I hurt my a knucle so bad my grandmother felt it incident"
2) i was working under my car and "suddenly got a medium sized Rust piece in my eye incident"...awful
3) checking out the new Fj cruzer at a yota stealer, while talking on my cell I "backed into a light pole incidnet". need a new bumper end
all in a good days work

Driving a 96 4runner, and working at jiffy lube, I've found it the easiest to go through the wheelwell(pop off cover), or go under the alternator. you dont need a wrench unless you used a wrench to put it on. Just a little elbow grease and a rag around your arm to cover your arm from the heat of the alternator. make sure to wash down your skidplates if you didn't take them off.

sorry to hear about you losing your synthetic mobil 1 and the filter. check to make sure the gasket came off with the old filter, you don't want 2 gaskets, which will react in spewing as you said. better luck next time.
