Old filter gasket.

Its very easy to remove if you know how:
Drain oil out of the pan, stab screwdriver through old filter and turn. It comes off everytime. Or buy a nice claw kinda wrench like me.

LOL, so true. I haven't changed the oil on my new taco, but it is going to be easy. The filter is right on top, you just have to open the hood.

ive noticed fram filters seem to leave a lil bit of the gasket and you need to scrape that off the block...on my 3.0 i turn the oem toyota filter until it doesnt turn anymore, no leaks, and i can take it off with my hand no problem....

I used to work at a toyota dealership and with a lift it only took about 8 minutes to get the skid plate the old filter off, drain the old oil and replace the filter and oil. Never had any problems on the 3.4 getting the filter off.

This is why I never tighten with a wrench...I always just reach under from under the tire and hand tighten... btw did you remember to add a little oil to the rubber part of the filter before you tightened it back into place? Because if you didn't you might have run the risk of breaking that seal....

Well I got the truck back from Toyota. They told me I had the wrong filter on there??? Don't know how that happened but it doesn't leak now and I got the ball joint recall done at the same time!!!!! I think I'm going to stick with the OEM filter from now on!

The skid plate is easy to remove and makes changing the oil a piece of cake. Hand tighten the filter, don't use a wrench.

you know..the oil change at the stealership is so worth the $25..haha

they do it in 25 minutes and even wash the truck.

I always check their work and this dealership has NEVER done any bad work for any of my own or my fathers yotas

I tried that trick on my very first oil change I ever did on my 91 CRX. I stabbed the screwdriver through the filter, and the filter would NOT come off. Ended up mangling the heck out of the filter. After wresting with it for at least an hour, and getting oil in my face, hair, and mouth, I finally got it off. Never again will I use the screwdriver method!

I was bettin on the wrong filter, got to the end of the thread and there it was. I learned about that the same way you did. The box # was right the filter # was wrong, I always hold the old up to the new one.I think it was the first or second time I ever changed oil. Think I was 15 or so. Yuck what a mess. And expensive.

BAM! wrong filter! I don't even know if I bought the wrong one or if the filter in the box didn't match the number on the box or ??? I'm so annoyed at myself for screwing this up that I may never change my own oil again.

I started checking the filter with number listed on the box after I grabbed a mobil 1 filter only to find a fram sitting inside. Luckly I was still in the store when I saw this.

Some advice
1)hey it was late and you couldent see easily and people also mess with the filters/boxes at the store....try to take it easy we have all done some dumb things with our cars and I think we learn more from our mistakes more than our successes. And as with this one, hopefully all are mistakes are small.

2) Do the oil changes yourself and take the skid plate off with every oil change and you will have to angle your arm in grab firm give it a good twist and it will come loose.

3) Oil change places: some porters don't always care about your truck (at all) but believe me, they care about their 1.3 Litre rust bucket honda civic with a idiot muffler ( A 15 HP increase!!!!, whatever). And becasue they really don't care they often royally mess things up ON YOUR RIDE.
AND it ends up costing YOU a ton of money because they are stupid jack asses.

4)Remember, you care more about your truck than they do

5) if you can, do the work yourself, if not, find someone you trust.

You know that flap that covers the opening to the oil filter...there are little circular plastic buttons that hold the flap on that are dissapearing on me. Does anyone know the part number for those? I need to pick some up the next time I'm at the dealer...
