Question which OME combination?

hi guys, I am planning to change my rear suspension setup. should I go for the med spring (ome890) and firm shock (ome86) setup or heavy spring (ome891) and comfort shock(ome 86c) setup? I drive my truck a lot on road and getting more into off road now. ARB recommend to go for the med spring and firm shock setup, but I realized that most of you guys go for the heavy spring setup. which setup am I able to obtain the best ride? I wonder if the ride on the heavy spring is overly stiff? I am running sway away taco valve at the front. Thanks guys!!

i have the med coils, theyre great.

the med coils are designed for carrying/towing only a little bit.

the heavy duty cares are for frequent towing/hauling.

My 0.02

I have the HD coils 891 and the firm shocks N86 in the rear

and the 881s and the N91S up front. The rear is a bit higher than the front, but when I tow stuff it levels out nicely.

I think it's probably more about what you want more than what will work, as just about any combination of that stuff will work, just depends on what look you want and what ride feel you are shooting for.

Basically I am looking for great ride. not too stiff. I plan to add roofrack, tow hitch, my subwoofer, one big amplifier, and may be putting a customize rack at the back. Do you guys think that the med coil and firm shock will do great for that? THanks!!

I would go med sping firm shock in the rear. In the front go heavy duty if you ever plan on getting a bumper, if not, med as well. The Mediums also give you more flex.

The recommendation that I am getting from the experts/dealers I have called/emailed is to use the 891's and N86C's.
My own twisted brain had figured on the reverse with softer springs and heavier shocks.
This is, by far, the most pain in the butt thing to figure out. I absolutely want to stay away from a harsh ride and yet I need to tow an haul on occasion.
Does a rear Class III hitch figure into the formula, like a TJM on the front might?
Grrrrr.

I posted earlier what I have on my rig and it actually rides MUCH better than the OEM Toyota stuff that was in there. Of course it is stiffer when you hit a speed bump, but it is far from being "harsh". I think mine rides MUCH better with the OME than it ever did with the OEM stuff.

There is no have your cake and eat it too type of situation for the combo.
You can either have a harsher ride and be fine for towing or heavy bumbers.
....or you can have a softer ride and sag during towing.

Hey Brian, do you have the firm shocks or the STD ones?

I have the N86 in the rear, I was under the impression these were the firm(standard) ones, as opposed to the N86C which is the comfort(soft)

I have the N91S in the front.

Whatever the heck they are called, firm, standard, etc...I like them!

I have the 891/N86 combo out back. It rides fine unloaded and handles a rig full of gear/trailer very well. It does seem stiffer than the tundra-valved SAWs (650 springs) up front. Keep in mind I do not expect a luxury, plush ride in a truck. IMHO I have my cake and eat it too . . .

Mmmmmm. Cake eating…..
I just don’t want my rear seat passengers to break their necks (and dent my roof) when I hit bumps in the PA highways.
I sure wish I could ride in some of your trucks with the different combo’s.

Brian, do you have a heavy receiver hitch on your rig or anything else that might give you a better ride with the 891/N86 combo?

Thanks,

Mike

Plain ole Reese OEM Toyota hitch that they put on everyting. Nothing special about it. My 4Runner drives like a truck, not a car, but with the OME stuff it is a nice ride. I have had nothing but compliments on the ride from folks who thought since I lifted it that the ride would suddenly turn to crap. They were all impressed, not to mention surprised that the ride was BETTER lifted than it was before, not worse!

Yeah, those head dents are a bitch to get out.

I think when spring comes around I will be doing the 881/891 and firm shock combo.
I always seem to have tons of gear/passengers so the higher spring rate is perfect.

I'm in the process of switching to the same hosting service as yotatech and corey, so I think it will be there when you need it!
