ok guys, so i had a half a quart of oil sitting in my cargo box. today when i was getting gas i happened to wonder how much oil was left in the container. i picked it up and it was empty. so it all leaked into my cargo box. thankfully i made my cargo box water tight by caulking the seams and then using rattle can bed liner on it. so there really isn't much left in the box, pretty much just a film left. but my tow strap just happened to be in the same section of my cargo box. it seemed to soak up ALL of the oil!!! so what do you guys think would be the best route to clean my tow strap?

 

hook it to a friends rig and pull it tight?

 

If your really serious about it, I guess you could take it to a laundromat and throw it in one of those heavy duty wahsers with some detergent. Although you may get some looks if you do.

I'm talking about the larger machines that can handle big items like blankets and comforters.

A regular washer may work, but the rope may get tangled around the spinner.

 

hmmmm maybe i should just toss it and get a new one, but how would i toss it? since it has oil on it, isn't that really bad for the enviornment?

 

if you do throw it away, double up some heavy garbage bags, and tie them securely, this will minimize the chance of the oil getting out to the environment

 

If you do plan to toss it out, it can simply go in your household garbage without any complications. It oughta be no problem since household garbage must go to a landfill that has a synthetic liner underneath the waste. However, I guess it could go to an incinerator too. Eiher way, no big deal as long as it is going to a state permitted facility.

If its not dripping, you can just toss it in the garbage. If it is, do like Joe said and wrap it up.

I'd toss it too- I wouldn't trust that strap afterwards, hydrocarbons + whatever additives could degrade the synthetic fiber of the strap.
