Noisy exhaust

Noisy exhaust
I had my 98 4Runner limited's muffler replaced about 7 months ago at local chain muffler shop and I know they installed a cheap, probably $40 muffler on it. Since then it's sounded like someone trying to clear their throat and now it's getting louder. I purchased the truck at time of muffler replacement and I just wanted to know with OEM muffler does it sond queiter? Or does someoneknow of an exhaust system/muffler that really makes things quiet without performance loss?
Any comment very appreciated
