1986 toyota turbo pick up ..lol has a bad engine ,should be a peice of cake...yea right






pick it up monday

am i right in finding that the head cc is 81cc's i was checking out some keith black pistons to replace these with ,the #4 has been sitting with water in it for 8-9 months ,so i'm betting the cyl is bad. so i'm looking at a complete rebuild

 

if it has had water in the cylinder for that long, you might need to punch it out a good deal(.040 or so) to clean up the rust pitting. rebuilding one of these motors is easy, dive right in! get your parts from www.engnbldr.com

 

well i removed the #4 plug and installed a good battery ,fired it over and as i was shooting the water out of the cyl. it fired up ..lol ,so i put the plug back in ,hit the key and with a little bit of throttle it came to life ,ran like a top ..lol so i backed it in the garage and i'm gonna pull the head tonight and see whats up .

 

ohh and yea i know about these engines ..lol i was a dealer tech for toyota for 3 years ..lol then joined the navy

yea there nice ,when there running good ,the toyota turbo isn't all that great...but when it works its kinda fun
don't get me wrong about this engine ,i have full intentions of rebuilding it ,but not right now ,i have 2 months till i seperate from the navy and movce to richmond to be with my wife and plan on building a garage on the land we just bought ,so i just want to make sure the turbo and everything else works good ,before i decide on weather to keep this a turbo truck ,or switch it over to reguler 22re

 

yea , well looks like its a good deal ,the head is in good shape ,just a head gasket barely failed at a water passage you can see it looks like the slot right where the ring is cracked at was the entry point
,wasn't a catosraupic failure ,just enough to raise the temp ,and then it just seeped into the chamber as it had been sitting lucky for me though the piston was at top dead center while it was sitting so the cyl was mostly stained as you can see in the above pic ,so i'm gonna home it slightly with a dingleberry hone and clean everything up and put the head back on with some ARP studs.here is a pic of the head at the suspected failure point,
looks like a got a decent deal for 600 bucks..lol

 

ordered my gaskets,timing chain kit and a new cam ,springs and a timing cover from engnbuilder today ,should be a kick ass ride when i'm done

 

hey i'm rebuilding a 22rte turbo motor right now just curious what do the numbers read on your fuel injectors? thanks

 

And another thing.. what color do the injectors appear to be?

 

The turbo trucks can be fun. I used to have an 87 4Runner turbo. I had to get a rebuilt turbo because the stock one was cracked. I bought a new exhaust manifold and ported it out to the gasket size and then I ported the turbine housing to match that. I also ported each runner in the manifold to smooth it all out. And I ported the exhaust elbow as well. When I put the stuff back together, the truck ran really strong! I was seeing 7-8 lbs of boost in the intake manifold. That 4Runner with the turbo engine ran much stronger than any 3.0 V6 Toyota I've had.

 

the numbers on the side of the injector is
one side has 1210-23
other side 23250-35020
kinda pink in color

well thanks to all the fine folks at www.engnbldr.com shes back up and running ,installed new valve springs,his 268C cam and his metal backed timing chain set and a new set of gaskets she's running good just a few pics from assembly

its hard to tell if its got any more power or not due to the low 1st gear of the r151 ad the tiny stock exhaust ,i didn't get to drive it stock due to the head gasket ,but its seems like it will be pretty good once the exhaust is taken care of.
