Thumbs up New oil filter (640x480 pics) long post

After doing some research this weekend, I decided to upgrade my oil filter. A couple posts here suggested that a Mobil 1 M1-301, Wix 51515/Napa Gold 1515, etc had the same threads but were longer and wider. So, I found an auto parts store this morning that sells Wix filters and bought a 51515. Went home, drained the oil, pulled the old filter off and proceeded to install the new filtre. Apparently, I failed to note that on the 3.4L engines, a filter relocation kit is needed due to the fact that the larger filter is impeded by the motor mount. D'oh! :pat: This is where having a second vehicle is REALLY handy. I called around to Checker, Pep Boys and Auto Zone but no one had a remote filter kit. I called a local Napa and the guy said "Oh yeah, we can get them." When I asked if any store in town had them he replied "The main warehouse in Comerce City definately has them." Cool So I jump in the pickup, drive 50 miles to the Napa warehouse in Commerce City just so they could tell me it's a special order. The drive back home was accompanied by words I can't repeat here.
I decided to drive down to Pep Boys and look at their filters. I found the exact replacement and then sifted through filters until I found another filter with the same thread and same diameter but longer. I ended up with two.
Pictured below is a Toyota replacement filter # 90915-YZZB1, Purolator PureOne PL20195, Purolator Premium Plus L30042, and Wix 51515.

All of them have the same thread. The first three are the same diameter. The Wix is quite a bit larger in diameter than the others as seen here:

I fitted both Purolator filters and they both fit fine on my engine. The only potential problem I could see would be on an engine without headers. The exhaust manifold collector could interfere with the longer 5 1/2" L30042.
I went ahead and installed the longest L30042. This added about a 1/2 quart to my oil capacity bringing it up to an even 6 quarts.

So, if you you want a longer and higher capacity filter without an expensive relocation kit, here are your part numbers:

Purolator PremiumPLUS/PureOne: L30042/PL30042 (5 1/2" long)
Wix: 51512
Napa Gold: 1512
Amsoil: SDF34
Mobil 1: M1-205
Fram: PH3639
Note: I cannot locate a part# for K&N filters.

Purolator PremiumPLUS/PureONE: L20195/PL20195 (4 3/4" long)
Wix: 51516
Napa Gold: 1516
K&N: HP-2009
Amsoil: SDF34
Mobil 1: M1-209
Fram: PH3600

EDIT: Updated with additional part numbers.

That's originally what I was looking for as I stated in my post. But, no one in town had one. So I went for the easier cheaper alternative until I can get my hands on a decent kit.

the filter relocation kits are a little different from the bypass filters. the relocation kit just relocates your full flow filter wheris(sp) a bypass filter takes about 10% of the pressure from the galley and runs it through a depth type media and returns it back into the pan or sometimes back into the galley, depending on the system config. please dont confuse the two they are not the same.

Okay, fine, but they still cost a minimum $140. A good Amsoil setup will run you $200. A good Canton setup will run you $240. And so on and so forth.
Sure, you can run and by-pass kit a run up to 15,000 miles between oil changes. But Mobil 1 will lose its lubricating properties by then. Amsoil extended service life oil will run you $8/quart. So, you dump 15 quarts into your engine with a by-pass kit. That's $140 for the by-pass kit, $120 for oil, $26 for a new by-pass filter, and let's say $8 for a new spin-on filter. @#$%! That's Almost $300. Every oil change thereafter would still cost $160. A BMW M5 oil change doesn't cost that much and they use 50W synthetic. So, $160 per 15,000 miles (average claim of by-pass kits). Mobil 1 recommends a service life of 7,500 or 5,000 under severe duty. My oil changes typically cost $35. That's a 5 quart container of Mobil 1 from Wal-Mart for $20. Another single quart is $4. A filter (usually Mobil 1) is $11. I can perform 3 oil changes at 5,000 mile intervals and still save $55 over the by-pass kit.

My point is that we can get a slightly longer service life with on-the-shelf synthetics without any additional cost. I thought that might be worth something to someone.

dont let the new prices fool ya blue i got most of my filters for under $50 from ebay and i got a new filter assy from Ralph wood off the bobistheoilguy site for $75 (01jr gulfcoast).

and as far as the oil changing, i dont change the oil anymore i just change the filter element (TP) and top off the sump with a qt of oil (the amount that the TP takes with it when removed).

now for the mobil 1 losing its lubricating properties i would hope you read the data thats been collected on the various oil sites and bypass filter sites like these (yeah sur they are biased)

gulf coast filters

Ralph woods site

frantz filters

fuel polishing

Yeah, unfortunately I wasn't able to come up with an unbiased opinion on these. The only results I found were the more "commercial" companies like Amsoil, Canton, etc. I'll have to look into this deeper

Wondering if anybody thinks PERMACOOL'S DUAL OIL FILTER RELOCATION KIT could be used with a FULL FLOW FILTER AND BYPASS FILTER? If not, then why since it appears to be similar to AMSOIL'S DUAL FILTER RELOCATION KIT?

The oil filter thread could be changed to accomodate the threads on the bypass filter (AMSOIL, FLEETPRIDE AND BALDWIN are the bypass filters I think could be used).

What about using WIX'S HIGH ENDURANCE RACING FILTER or another racing filter as the BYPASS FILTER? That way the oil filter thread probably wouldn't need to be changed.

I'm not too sure that the the Permacool dual filter relocation kit would work in a filter/bypass filter configuration. My understanding of the bypass filters it that they require a regulated step down in oil pressure because they are microfiltering a small amount of the oil in a pass (approx 10-15%). Thus if full oil pressure is used the filtering element would be "blown out" by the excess pressure.

Someone here will correct me if I'm wrong. Best of Luck

Andrew
