Is my starter going bad?

Hi all,

About a month ago my truck failed to start when I turned the key, I waited and turned it a second time and the car fired up. My truck is a 5spd manual, so I have to depress the clutch pedal all the way down when starting, otherwise the car won't start.
During this last week, this failing to start happened a few times, and today it happened twice. My initial thought is that my starter is going bad, since it's over 20 years old. I also thought it could be my clutch pedal.

How can I tell for sure what my issue is??? I do have a "Clutch Start Cancel" button which I'll begin to use to see if the issue is with my clutch pedal.

Please advise,

Thanks,

Why don't you use it now for troubleshooting purpose? I use mine pretty much every time I start, because I start in neutral.

Start by checking if your starter solenoid CONSISTENTLY clucks ENERGETICALLY motor turns when you apply 12V directly from battery to its control pin as shown on my post here:

This is for 1986 but should apply to yours.

When the starter solenoid contacts start going bad, which is common, the starter will click/clack/clunk, but not crank.

If you have no clicking going on, try the clutch start cancel button and see if that makes a difference, or try pushing the clutch pedal down a little more. There's a switch that engages when the clutch is all the way down, I think the end of that switch wears a little and requires you push the pedal even further down, at some point, you can't do that. You can adjust that switch up some.
