So I received my e-bay manual locking hubs yesterday and opened them up only to find one bolt (the ones with the cone washers) in each sheared off in the hub body. The guy claims to have been selling them for someone else and would have let me knowm if he knew. Yeah right! Anyway I need suggestion as to how take the sheared bolts out without screwing anything up. And to think I was going to rebuild them and put them on my '95Runner today. Oh yeah, someone point me to a good site for the ADD to Manual changover. Thanks

Sorry to hear about your issues. E-bay is sorta hit and miss.

Manual hubs on our 2nd Gens are simply plug and play. Check these out:

try drilling them out in the center....Go buy a set of "back outs" and slowly back the remaining part of the bolt out. The back outs are basically a drill bit with a reversed thread up front so when you put the drill in reverse the threads grip into whatever you're taking out.

 

The best kind of screw extractors come with left hand drill bit also, as you drill in a ways they usually back the bolt out. If they don't then use the extractor.

 

I would try using a sharp punch at the edge of the broken stud, and try to turn it out with a hammer. If you are lucky, it will come right out.

Thanks Andrew, Ill look into them. I should clarify the opening post. I stated the bolts were the ones with the cone washers when, in fact, they are the 10mm bolts going into the hub body.

I would if I hadn't erased all the freakin' info after he told me they were "his friends". Sorry. His name was something like nine2nine. Anyway I'd recognize him again and let all know to stay away. Funny thing is, I was cleaning all the other parts for reassembly and they all looked good but the hub body looks like somebody beat it with a sledge hammer where the face attached to the body. What exactly were they beatin' on it for. There is another bolt hole that almost is off center because the "point" took such a beating it deformed the hub body where the threads are. Time to re-tap a 10mm in there. One thing that overshadows all of this is the fact that they are genuine Toyota Aisan.

I asked because I wanted to check his feedback as i'm sure you did. It seems like he has very good feedback. I wouldn't have expected something like this from someone who had good feedback.

Maybe he really didn't know that they were like that. I know i've had friends try to give me something that was broke and never telling me about it. I allways checked before I sold it to someone.

Yeah they do looks a little beat up maybe from the shots...but oh well if you can get em all working $40 is still not an outrageous price I guess.

 

Headed to a machine shop if my attempts fail. Will post pics of the completed setup.

 

I fitted a pair of those to mine today . Pretty beat up where the 'cap' bolts on . Had to file the face flat again , but lucky no broken bolts . All the ones Ive seen seem to have been hammered off the donor axles .

 

If you're talking about the bolts on the outer part of the hub and not the cone washer bolts, then they don't do anything other than seal up the hub. They don't have any stress on them from the 4wd mechanism. I've got 1 bolt broken off in each of my hubs and they do fine.

 

And to think I put that same one on my watch list, thankfully I didnt have the money at the time to bid. That sucks to hear about that.

 

It all worked out today as I brought them in to my mechanic and he had them out and re-tapped in no time. Just waiting on some gaskets from the dealership and I'm home free. I totaled out at around 90$. Not to bad for the whole deal.
