Its so hard to know exactly what you are talking about over the net. I would almost suggest that you go to a dealer and drive a 3rd gen 4Runner and see if it does the same thing. Be ready to fend off the salesmen though...

This is my first 4WD ever. Is this typical of 4WD's?
Are you driving around in 2WD mode or 4WD?

Thanks for your thoughts and/or suggestions. I'm in 2WD all of the time regarding 4RUNR's questions. And 96 Runner, your suggestion has already crossed my mind. As soon as I have some spare time I'll drive my wife's '88 Maxima SE with 160K+ on her and act like I'm interested in trading. What do you think?

This downshifting thing is puzzling to say the least. Can't seem to find much on the forum where others may have same experiences. It can't be considered normal..
