And dragr, as for your mileage, I think you should be reading the 14% one. Because I had my mom in her rental car drive the same exact distance I did for over 50 miles, and my odo was off by 13%. So add the 13% and I get around 16 mpg city. Factor in your roof rack and spare will drop it by 1 mpg, and you're gettin 15. Sounds fair

Cool, that's what I thought, but wasn't sure after Andy brought up the other way.

yeah, ZUK... i saw that on pirate too.
i tried it. it gave me a ~2mpg increase (from about 17.5 up to 19.5 on the highway) on the first tank, then i ran two tanks w/o any and the mpg dropped back down. i'm now running it again in this tank to see if the mpg's go back up.
i'm running 3 oz in a ~15 gal fillup.
i still think brett has a sick O2 sensor causing his bad mileage. i had one (front sensor) that wasn't throwing codes but was killing my mileage. i replaced it and went from 15 MPG to 17.5 on the very next tank.

Yes, I used the GPS. I even logged it over several miles and at different speeds. Andy and Steve are saying that the odometer doesn't read from the same source as the speedo, so it may read differently. Andy has a valid point and his theory is mathematically correct, I just want to know which one works. Edit: I only checked the speed with the gps, I guess I should check the mileage (distance traveled) too. Maybe I can do that Sunday or Monday, I'm leaving in the Chevy this afternoon to go camping.

Latest update. I'm over 500 miles now and will change the gear lube this week. I checked the odometer versus my GPS this weekend. I logged it over a 100 mile trip. Here is what I got:
GPS 100 miles
4Runner odo indicated 84.7 miles
So that is 15.3% off for the odometer, but I'm still only calculating the speedo to be about 14% off.
Given the 15.3% off, I averaged 15.7 mpg going about 70 mph on hilly terrain (not mountains) with the a/c on. When I filled up, the fuel gauge was at about 1/2 tank, but I could only squeeze in 6.95 gallons.
The power with the 4.88's was nice though, on some big hills where I would previously lose 10 to 12 mph in 5th gear, now I only lose 3 or 4 mph.
I'm thinking I have some problems here though. I know I'm probably losing 1 mpg to the tire on the roof-only place it will fit for now. Also, my 4Runner through the P0171 code a weeke ago, autozone cleared the code and it has not come back yet. So, maybe the front 02 sensor needs replacing?
I have also heard some talk of a TSB on fuel gauges? I'll be doing a search for info on that today, b/c isn't the fuel tank 18.5 gallons? If so, I shouldn't be reading 1/2 full when I've only used 6.9 gallons-the pump clicked off at 6.1 gallons, but I squeezed in the extra.

I thought our fuel tanks were 16.5 gal, but I may be wrong.
I also talked to Dyas Toyota about TSB's and they said there were none.(assuming they were telling the truth)
-Matthew
**edit**
I am averaging 17.5 combined MPG w/ my 265's.

sweet. So it IS off. Excellent, that means my mileage is A LOT better than I thought it was.
on a side note: I drove a Matrix this weekend down to Purdue from Michigan, over a 600 mile trek. Only had to fill up twice with 34 mpg!!!!! I seriously need to switch cars..........

What do you estimate mpg wise on your 4Runner now?

Finally got to tow it today after a lot of running around. I went out and towed it 12 miles and right now I'm letting it cool off before doing it again and then maybe 2 more times tomorrow to get the correct towing break in miles done.
Anyway, it towed fine. I didn't get in a big hurry-not that I could. For a refresher the camper weighs about 3600 to 3700 pounds with a tongue weight around 350 to 400 pounds. The sway controller really helped on the interstate and the wind (about 15 mph) today. Also, the Prodigy brake controller I installed works great. I got up to about 75 mph on the interstate briefly, I think towing this camper is gonna be best around a top speed of 65 mph. I can tow in 5th gear on flat ground, but 4th is a must for any hill at all. Really long or steep hills may require 3rd-I'm sure everyone behind me is gonna hate me in the mountains.
I had no problems with the rear bumper that I have been concerned so about, and the movement that I was feeling through it seems to be gone or way less than it was. Now, I need to go to Wal Mart and buy some mirrors for towing b/c all I see behind me is camper.

I know what you mean about towing. Just made a quick run to Auburn and towed back a 6x12 Uhaul (loaded down). With my A/T I had to keep it in 3RD gear to stay above 65mph. Ended up averaging 13.5 MPG over the 700 mile drive...

I have my rear axle off the truck and completely torn apart. In 2002 the Yukon gears I got were indeed made by US Gear, my ring has the Interstate sign with the G in it.
They still look good, 45K later. More milage than I had on the stock gears.

First time reading this, any updates from anyone?
Im considering re-gearing. My 4R is so damn heavy and i believe its killing my power and gas mileage, even with the Supercharger. I have 265s now, but would love to get back to 33s next time, hopefully 305s. 4.56 v. 4.88 ????? Such a dilema, but plenty of time to make the right decision.
