I've heard the same about pennzoil having the wax additive.... As posted earlier, all the engines I've torn apart that have used pennzoil had a varnish like covering over them, which could be attributed to such a wax additive.

 

i didn't think it was as much of a wax additive as it was from having a wax(paraffin) base. same goes for quaker state, i think they're the same oil.

 

I think your right. I couldn't remember if it is a additive or part of the base. Either way it's waxy some way or another.

 

I've been using Quaker State for the past 3 oil changes. Its alright, but i'd rather use something something else that doesn't get black quick.

I'm thinking about putting in Redline Synthetic oil in my 3.0, is this alright, or is it too much for the aching old engine to handle?

 

Synthetic oil may be one of those things you'll just have to try to see what happens. Id put some in, and watch the level, if you notice the level going down, or it leaking, then go back to regular dino... btw the level going down could be due to it slipping past the rings due to improved lubrication.... seen that before on older engines. however when i switched mine to synthetic at 208000, i didnt see any problems.

 

I agree. It's all a mater of chance. I think there are a lot of people who have switched to sythetic and had great results, but there is a chance of it happening if it starts leaking switch back.
