Could this have anything to do with it? I think Toyota recommends the first oil change to be at 5000 miles. On my truck it has a sticker that says, "don't change before 5000 miles!!"
I'm still going to change it around 3500 since I've done some off roading and lots of stop-n-go.
I also plan on using Mobil 1 5/30

I dont think small amounts of oil consumption is anything to worry about. I think alot of it depends on the engine too. My LS1 is my camaro would use about a quart of oil in 6k miles. It did that from when I got it at 7k miles till I sold it at around 21k. Most all of the LS1 owners experienced that with M1. Some would use less switching to a different brand of synthetic. I think there are lots of variables.

Nope, doesn't have anything to do with changing my oil before the 5K mark. I've done this on every new vehicle I've owned and planned to keep. The oil looks like black metallic paint on the first change. Why would you want metal parts swimming around in your motor? The only reason they tell you to leave it in there is because the oil they use is low viscosity high molly which is supposed to help the "break in" period. I don' t believe in the so called "break in" oils and I can't stand the thought of trapped metal flakes in my motor.

IMO, if your going to use M 1 you should use the 10w30. The 5W is too thin... Mobil1 is much thinner oil then other synth's of the same weight from what I'm learning.

I'm learning that small consumption is normal which is a relief. Different motors consume oil while other's may not due to their tolerances.

That's why I was asking if anyone had seen similar results using M1 in their V8 4Runners. I've heard about the LS1's consuming oil and it seems to happen more commonly in the larger displacement motors.... I'm going to take some advice from the guy's over at the oil drop and try a different syn such as Amsoil or Redline. Thanks for the post...

I just called a few Toyota service guys about synthetic and was told NOT to use it before 15,000 miles. They said if you break in a new motor with synth the rings and such won't seat properly and you'll end up burning more oil than you should.

Thier recommendation was to make my first change at 500-1000 miles and then follow the scheduled services. Changing sooner than every 5,000 depending on your driving conditions won't hurt. Personally I never go past 3,000 regardless.

That's good to know. Well I'll hold off on synthetic until 15K. Won't hurt to use regular old oil
I'll also do my first change earlier too- sounds like everyone is changing earlier.

This topic has come up a number of times. If you do a search you'll see. Also Gadget has the Oil Bible on his website with a wealth of information.

I asked lots of questions before I switched to M1 5-30 at about 6K KM'S. The service manager at the dealer here, and many local motor heads, said switching was not a problem in addition to many other synth users here with 03's and the new Toyota motors.

I checked my oil this morning and I haven't burned a drop and the oil is CLEAN and the engine runs SMOOTH after 3K more KM.

In another related matter, how often do you change your differential fluid and what brand do you use? Do you need to do an early replacement like with the oil?

That's purely a myth. BMW's, Corvettes, and most other european cars are filled with Synthetic at the factory. Corvettes are filled with Mobil 1.

Series 2000 Amsoil 75w90 is what I use in my diffs and TCase. It's a lifetime fill.
